If you look at the back of most (Especially L&L) videos, you will find a tag that says, "Not For Rental." Why would magic DVDs be for rental? If they were, almost no one would buy them.

My brother used to belond to an online service called NETFLICKS where they would mail you videos you would tag online with unlimited rentals for so much $$ a month. It never occured to me at the time, but then I was reading on another board that netflicks does carry some magic dvds. Im guessing its all basic but you might want to check that out
when i beat you at your own game, you'll have no place else to turn

Sometimes if you join magic associations like the Society of American Magicians (SAM) or International Brotherhood of magicians (IBM) they will have videos and books that you can borrow.

Look in the children's section of your local library as well as the adult section. A lot of good stuff gets hidden there.
Library magic books cost nothing and contain enough magic to get you started and even to develop enough to rate paying gigs. Sid

Magicguy, no offense man, but are you being serious?? Actually, there is one video that I know of for rental at you local blockbuster. But you'll not find them revealing the secrets. I think it is titled, "The Art of Magic." I'm not sure that's the right name, I think it is though, anyone else know for sure??? But anyways, maybe you should check it out, hopefully it will give you a different outlook on magic... and why our secrets don't need to be for rental.

I'm sure they are probably trying to find a legal loophole around the "Not for Rent" label on most magic videos/dvds. They may be interested in additional financial backing or support from someone like you. |

I know you could borrow from SAM if you are a member But I don't know if instructional videos are included.

Video Rental makes sense for the entertainment industry where renting a movie is like paying to see a show (fleeting moment of entertainment). You pay each time you want to be entertained.
The education business is totally different. You will seldom see educational media for rent (and rightfully so), because the customer is paying for the education and information, not for a fleeting moment of entertainment. The potential audience is not as large for educational material, and the material by its nature needs to be studied more than once to be of any real use.

Free libraries are a good source.
My local library (a fairly large one) has titles to loan that I was quite surprised to find. Note: If you are deadset on renting, keep them until they are overdue. Paying a fine is about the closest you'll get. |

Does this mean it's okay to donate magic videos to one's public library? How about magic texts?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Interesting question, Jon.
Obviously there is no law against it and the library would welcome it, but what about the magic community? Personally, I don't like the idea and sort of cringed when I had seen some of the titles at the library (didn't stop me from pulling out my card, though). Funny, its almost as if its fine for me to borrow the tapes, but I sure don't want anyone else to! |

Hey, maybe that has something to do with the fact that you know about yourself that you are serious about magic. I think that I wouldn't want to have someone in my neighberhood who just reads the books once trys to perform hasn't practiced enough and exposes the secret. If that happends a lot because books, tapes and articles are in the librarys, I just wouldnt like it too much I think.
And sure it's clear that the childrens books teaching one or to basic tricks I have absolutly no problem with but I don't think I would be to happy to find Mark Wilson's complete course in magic on the shelf of every library in the area. Oh well just my thoughts on that, And I probably have no right of speach since I only started a year ago but this is what I would imagine would be your thoughts about not wanting other people to borrow tapes or the books, same thing. bye |
