Have you ever had a situation where you had to rely on your skills to get you off? Pretty much like vanishing on a bad date or picking a pair of hadcuffs in a patrol car. Let me start:
A few weeks ago, a discipline officer (people tasked to keep the peace on campus) spotted me with a deck of cards. He came up to me and inquired as to why I had a deck of cards in school--a violation of one of the sections in the student hadbook (its explicitly written that cards are forbidden). He was about to confiscate the deck and give me a citation when I told him that I'm a magician. I did the Two Card Monte on him which got him convinced. He let me off with a smile and a "thank you". Now, he always asks me to perform for him whenever I see him. I am planning on seeking his help to repeal the campus law against cards. |

I'd say that was a great way to get yourself out of a bad situtation. Good job.
As far as getting the campus law changed, I don't see anything wrong with a ban on playing cards, die and other gambling instruments in a school atmosphere. That feeling could just be from past experience of attending a school where gambling caused major problems among the student body. Most laws like that don't just come out of the blue. They were instituted to stop a problem and are kept on the books to prevent that same problem from reoccuring. Even if the law means you can't do magic at school, I think the law is doing more good than harm. Go to school to learn, magic can always be done off campus. |

Wherever you are people would always want entertainment;why can't it be on campus? Besides, magic has been an integral part of me, we are inseperable. I cannot imagine a three hour break without a deck in my hands. |

Sorry Swift, I have to agree with Matt, cards should be left at home. I'm sure you can find a million ways to amuse and amaze others without the old pasteboards. Let us know what else you show your friends and tell us about their reactions to your magic. Thanks!

Well, I have used leaves from shrubs; just quick vanishes, reproductions and transpositions. I had an audience of six and we had fun with it. Still, it is with a deck of cards that I am most capable and comfortable. Besides, shouldnt a school, particullarly a universtiy, allow the students to develop their skills?

There are lots of things you can do with coins, and they haven't been banned yet, as far as I know.

Hi again, If you can do tricks with leaves from shrubs, I know you're inventive enough to WOW 'em with sponge balls, rubber bands, silks and all the other things besides cards. If you're really stuck on cards, are there any besides playing cards that you'd like to try? Let us know what else you go with and the reaction you get!

I kind of feel that the ban on cards is totally uncalled for. They remind me of church folks. They are the kind who say "Oh brother you should not have cards because they are the devil's tools!" Yeah, right. Go get a life.

That is an anal response to cards on campus. Any problems with cards/die ect are due to a minority of criminally minded individuals who cause the law to change by a reaction factor of a nanny state.
Like the banning of pokemon cards on the basis that all of the kids know every pokemon but don't know the kings/queens of england. Yes, Instead of using the power of pokemon cards as an educational tool (which they are) they ban them!!! Onto the thread proper... I am a slim individual and have the function of being handcuff savvy. I have escaped from handcuffs in the back of a police car and handed them to the officer in the front. THEY WERE SHOCKED!!! and also had to write an account of my actions and also got a telling of for not securing me in the back off the car. Their potestations were falling on deaf ears as the cuffs are considered tamper proof. (ie the ones with the plastic spacer between the metal cuffs)

I have freed from real cops cuffs 3 times now. (I know I was a real bad boy once) It is not really skill just the fact my wrists and hands are very narrow. What I do is this...
If the cuffs are loose then I'm laughing. If they are tight I tighten them more then complain about how tight they are and my circulation is blocked. They will loosen them slightly, enough for me to slide out at will. The last time I done this was infront of a custody officer. I had 1 hand free and kept it in the cuff. I was cuffed in front in the Z formation (hands in cuffs from diff sides) and when no attention was on me I slipped my right out and cuffed myself to the CS's desk in a fast move. They all looked up to see me attached to the desk looking confused. From what I could gather they had to review the CCTV to see what I had done and still did not work out how I got free.

Wow. So, partizan, what exactly did you do to get into those Houdini-esque situations?

Thanks. I had a close call about 5 years back when 2 guys entered my house and tried to rob me at knife point (and cleaver). The claret did flow and one poor robber ended up in a bad way. Guess who got arrested ? Yup, Me!

Are cards the only kind of magic you do? do you do close-up or street at all? I always keep a couple of effects in my purse, maybe you could carry around a trick in your pocket not involving cards, and change it for a new one at the end of the day.
