This is a spin-off of Doha Dealer's post on doing a levitation in a shopping center with the audience all around. I'm curious as to how magicians feel about working surrounded; not street magic, but stage-type stuff.
A number of years ago I produced a weekend magic show in a shopping center, and the first thing I did was to design a stage for us, complete with a small backstage area. And, lo and behold, they built it right to my specs.
That's our departed buddy Burt, aka The Great Burtini, doing his famous Cups and Mice routine

I posted a forum a while back about working surrounded in my case-cabaret with audience on 3 sides-it definitely is a challenge as it limits a lot of stage effects but with a bit of thought you can build an act to suit-great fun!
I managed to create an act with foolproof angles mainly- still worked well & now have a new area in which to perform Was definitely worth the effort! Look forward to hearing more about this! |

Bev Berrgeron published a book on Tony Marks which discusses doing a show in the round.
My personal experience of doing "surrounded" shows taught me (unless it's a well known effect), even if the audience sees something... they have no idea what they've seen, because, they can't appreciate the full effect. The problem... It's like being seated in the balcony behind a support beam trying to see over a big haired lady. Not a show I'd pay to watch!

Gene de Jean built a whole illusion show that could be done in the round. He did this about 1960 or so. I was in on some of the construction. Among the illusions were a thin model sawing, a "no guts," and a broom suspension.
His "no guts" was very clever. His "shiva" levitation could also be done surrounded.

Working surrounded allows you the flexibility to work any where. All of the illusions in our show can be performed in the round. It makes life easier.
