I purchased Expert Coin Magic Vol I by David Roth about a month or so ago. I was and still am happy with this video. I had seen references to Ammar's The Complete Introduction to Coin Magic video referenced often, and usually the advice was that either one was fine.
And that is true... but... Today I had a chance to see Ammar's video... and to *me* it greatly surpasses Roth's Vol I video. IMHO Ammar's video gives a beginner much more bang for the buck. I prefer his presentation style better than Roths, he has credits for the sleights and routines and intresting facts about the magicians, he teaches many more sleights than Roth's video, he teches many more routines than Roth's video (and most are stand up where most (or all) of Roths are sit down), he gives great general advice on Magic and to my suprise even talks about respecting another magicians turf. The video is all around much superior to Roth's Vol I. So if anyone is contemplating one over the other, or like me has Roths and was wondering if you should pick up Ammar's... then by all means get Ammar's, its really top notch! |

I've seen both videos and to me Ammar's video is value for money. However, Roth's handling is much better than Ammar's. Just compare their classic palm and you'll know what I'm talking about. If you have the extra money, get both.

ChessMess,
I would agree if you are only comparing Roth's volume 1 with Ammar's DVD, that the DVD has more for the money. I think the comparison is Roth's Volumes 1-3 compared to the DVD. That is where I would probably lean toward the Roth videos. With Roth's volume 1 you don't even learn the Retention vanish, Edge Grip, Curl palm, Deep Back Clip, or the Palm change, all that stuff is on vol. 2 and 3. Plus you learn some awsome routines (more than the Ammar DVD). Though if you are looking at just pure basics learned for the lowest amount of money, the DVD is it. |

While we're at it, don't forget Roth's influential contributions written up in CoinMagic and in his own book. For those who like learning from a print source, they can't be beat.
As for videos, I'd consider the Roth tapes to be a carefully thought out course of instruction, of progressive difficulty, while Ammar's tapes offer the fruit of his wading through many handlings for coin effects and offering the best and cleanest ones. The approach isn't as systematic as Roth's, but there's a ton of great magic. In short, both video sets offer important pluses, I'd say. Jerry |
