I was in a local magic shop and the owner/operator performed a trick for me that he said came out of the "Art of Astonishment" book series by Paul Harris. I would love to know the name of this trick or something similar. Here goes....
He asked me to take a regular deck of cards and remove about 1 quarter of it and retain it. With the stack in my hands he asked me to remove the top card and place it face up on the bottom of the stack. He sadi "that's one", and he asked me to keep doing that until I had counted all of the cards and was then holding a face-up stack instead of a face-dwon. There were a total of 11 cards. He then stated that he was going to "magically" transfer 3 more cards into my stack. He then flicked at the deck a couple of times and finally riffled through the deck and asked me if I felt anything, obviously I felt nothing at all. But when I counted the cards back onto the table I was astonished to see that there were 14 cards instead of 11. If anyone could help me to find out the name of this effect that would be great. Thanks in advance. |

"las vegas leaper" by paul Harris
it's the strongest card effect I do, and love performing it, I learned it from Michael Ammar's easy to master card miricles vol 1, with a load of other good tricks EDIT: it looks like he didn't do the full routine, the way I learned it, you start with 10 cards, when 3 jump making 13, then 3 more jump making 16 although I didn't learn mine from the aoa books
when i beat you at your own game, you'll have no place else to turn

Who was the originator of this effect?

I think Paul Harris was the originator. I have the Art of Astonishment videos. They are highly reccomended.

I too believe that this effect is a Paul Harris original; Michael Ammar published the effect in volume two of the Magical Arts Journal, my copy is a predominantly Paul Harris issue called "The Act", dated 1982;

If you like this effect, check out Mike Close's One Butt Ox, Two Butt Ox
It is a very cool effect, very similer only there are 2 spectators. They count out 20 cards, divide them anyway they want, and then you randomly pick a number, and that number transfers to the other person. Each count their stack and its right, then it travels back and the packet that they just counted out(dealing, no funny stuff) now has the extra cards again! I like the effect a lot, its a good cards across |

LV Leaper is initially written up in Las Vegas Close Up from Harris, pp. 112-115. Chuck Martinez writes, "This is a very special 'Cards Across' routine in that you never touch the spectator's cards. He counts them out himself, the ten cards never leaving his hands!"

Las Vegas Leaper is a reputation maker! Check out Jim Pace's version called "Two Hearts That Beat As One" in his "Restaurant Worker's Handbook". This one will get you booked for other performances. It uses a guy and a girl with some nice romantic patter. I won't say much, but if you want to know more about this trick, buy the book! It is a must have!
