I was watching the PBS Documentary, "The Art of Magic". In this documentary there was a small performance of a man with 4 coins on the table. He waved his hands over the coins and they jumped from place to place.
I was wondering if anyone had any idea what this matrix type effect was called, and where I could obtain it. Thank you -Matthew Wadsworth

It is a bare handed assembly. See David Roth's "Chinese Coin Assembly (Chink-a-Chink)" from his Book Expert Coin Magic or his video "Expert Coin Magic Made Easy" Volume 1.
Or Michael Ammar's rendition of the routine called "Shadow Coins" on his "Easy to Master Money Miracles" Vol. 2 video. |

David Roth introduced us to his barehanded coin assembly in 1976. Chink-a-Chink using coins.
Since then, others have published minor variations and versions using gaffs. Some of the younger generation call it "Shadow Coins" after the title of a minor variation published by Michael Ammar, with the permission of David Roth, about a decade ago.

Sanju, there's a thread on this. I'm not sure it's a slur, but there are those who have taken it that way. As I said in that thread, there's a routine in the Tarbell course (or greater magic) in which the magician is drawn as a "chinee" doing the trick with weights from an "oriental" measuring scale. That's got a definite "political incorrectness", but I don't know if it's a misguided take on the original, or if it was the original.
As a Chinese American coin magician, I'd like to know. Anyone have the scoop?

A small reach for a big idea:

Dean Dill has a nice one called "call shot." Simple, very visual. Strictly non-gaff? then do Dean's No Extra's. The one thing about shadow coins though, is you can do a ton of stuff, you don't necessarilly need to do excactly what the book/video says. Personally, when I saw Roth do his chink-a-chink, I was not impressed; I would say you should go with a Shadow coins VARIATION. Of course, this is only my opinion, and what do I know?

Jim Pace has an instantaneous matrix routine called Quick-O-Chink. Maybe that's what you saw?
