I love shadow coins and have taken so much time in working it out my hands don't cross your line of vision at any time. BUT this is a big but for me... I am some kind of purist. The extra kills me. I do a verson of Dean's that has a Paul Harris ending and you can just slay every one with it. To boot you can set a coin in each corner of your mat and have all four go to one corner at once. No extra coin either. Oh by the way no shell... I was wondering if any one knows the pure effects with only the right amount of coins. I mean if you say you have three, you only have three. I saw a guy from Japan did a 3 coin across with no extras and you see him openly place the coins in his hand and they still go. The coins are in that hand until he closes them, then boom the other hand. I sat down with him and learned it, although this is not a trick for every one. I know only a few that can perform this type of trick. You have to be right on.I think Dan Would love this thing. But please let me know about the coin tricks...

In my opinion I have no problems using extra coins or gaffs and gimmicks. I still do learn routines or reconstruct handlings that uses no extra coins or gaffs. You know just incase if I dont have my coins on me and someone wants me to preform an inpromptu matrix or coins a cross or chink-a-chink.
Jay Sankey's Mr. Clean coins across uses only 3 coins and and you see 1 at a time each coin appearing in the other hand. Peter Mui has an instant coin assembaly where all 4 coins put in 4 different corners assemble all at once at one corner. To me good coin magic doesn't mean that you dont use extra coins or gaffs its what the spectators remembers and belives. What happends in the spectators mind is where the real magic happens.

Hi Full, you are totaly right, it's what you do, not how you do it! As Marlo said "if it were really magic how would it look!" It should not look like a move or a gaff but magic! I have always thought that you should learn your sleight of hand first, so when you handle gaff coins, it will look the same as handling real coins. Then if someone hands you some coins you can do some good stuff with just their coins, then latter if you do some stuff with your coins they will think it is the same thing!
But there is just some stuff you can't do with real coins alone! And a lot of stuff you may be able to do with just real coins but not anywhere as cleanly or magicaly looking! So it is a trade-off. You have to say, is it worth carying around this gaff with me all the time just to do this routine! If the gaff can be used for lots of routines then it makes it worth carrying the gaff with you! A shell is something that can be used for a 100 or so routines! If you don't think that it can be used for that many just ask me and I will show them to you if you got the time. Ok, that's my two cent's worth. thanks. Best David Neighbors The Coinjurer |

I am most definately not a purist and will use any gaff if I think it can be rung (sp?_) in and out of play convincingly and can be handled naturally. I have, however, looked into this as well.
I was never happy with the matrix approaches that only used four coins - there was a bit too much fiddling for my liking. That was until I came across a gem in an old set of lecture notes from Mr Curtis Kam. The trick is called inverted matrix and is actually a matrix WITH backfire. I love this trick. If you have the notes 'All the World's a Stage', give it a try.

Bill Malone has a matrix routine on his new video series. 4 coins, 4 cards - that's it! Uses the standard pick-up move. Excellent routine - check it out.
It makes me think about doing a coin trick! mike

Chris,
Have you tried Kohlers "Two ahead is better than one"? It uses only four cards and four coins and is exceptionally "clean". He also has a nice reverse assembly called "return to spender" Neither routine uses gaffs.

Thank you guys who just told me the effects.
I am aware that gaffs help the effects look cleaner, altough that's not what I ask for. I do however wish to thank you all for the Ideas and thoughts. Remember I ask for something and you gave me some thing different. If you ask for pancakes and you get waffles, It's close but not what you asked for... So let me get back to me french toast. Oh by the way David I still want to get the notes on that coins through the table that you did at the PCAM a few years ago. The one on the glass table.

Richard Sanders has a coins across that happens in the specs. Hand, you can find it on his "Close up Assasin" video.

Al Schneiders Matrix uses only the 4 coins the spectator is aware of.
Very clean and it blows people away. I also like coins across. I use a magic coin to draw the others across. It makes the effect even more mysterious! You can get the routine from Bobo's Modern Coin Magic in the Coins across chapter.

Tobias - - All the effects on Rune Klan's video ("Three Pieces of Silver"?) are gaffless. There's a very nice production sequence.
As for your being a "purist," that's good -- but perhaps you can focus your desire for purity on effects, rather than on methods. After all, the audience never sees the method -- only the effect. Jerry |

Some of you are mistaken....Tobias is talking about coin assemblies not card and coin matrix effects.
I'm a freak for the pure methods to, but I love to use a shell because it allows for some really great shows that are just not possible with just 4 normal coins. |

Hi TOBIAS,
You Can Find my Coins, Thru the Glass Table Top, in the Last Year of Apocalypse! 15-20 has just come out in hard-bound. So it should be easy to find! And sorry about the last post I was talking to Full. The only thing I have seen using just four coins uses a TT. and to layman that's what it look's like! Best David Neighbors The Coinjurer |

Well talking about gaffless shadow coins routines, I like one that uses the Slo-Mo-Kick, I guess you know what I am talking about, you simply put the four coins one in each corner of the mat, you simply show both hands empty the coins are without shell, and when you cover two coins one of them travels to the other, you do this until the four coins are in the same corner.
Is very visual and interesting MAGO68

Tobias,
As you said, Dean Dill has some very clever and beautiful routines on his videos. Both gimmicked and ungimmicked. A lesser known version exists from Tom Stone, written in his book The Warpsmith Returns. Cool thing is you can use four different coins or even borrowed fingerrings. check it out! I mentioned this earlier, there's a guy living in Vegas who does AWESOME stuff with cards and coins, and as far as I can say "as pure as you could wish for". His name is Armando Lucero, Dean introduced me to him last Desert Magic Seminar. I'm still waiting for his name to pop up more! Dan LeFay, holland

I don't know about you guys, but I fell in love with Ammar's presentation of Shadow Coins on Easy to Master Money Miracles Vol. 2. He uses a shell, but it looks so pretty. I don't feel bad for using gimmicked coins. I mean, my favorite trick is the Hopping Half. Anyways, I'm interested in this Japanese guy that TOBIAS spoke of. I like to learn really difficult tricks, just to see if I can do them. Most of the stuff I don't take out to the public, but I like to prove to myself that I'm not half bad. So TOBIAS, if you could helpl me find information about that, I would be eternally greatful.
