Strange Ceremonies is the book for you if you are a beginner. It has historial as well as practical information for both the beginner and the audience tested performer. The routines are not complex and as with most of Eugene's work the methods are simple as well. Yet these are routines of great impact.
The Sheherazade book is a fun book to read and I enjoyed doing just that. I am not quite sure that there are routines that you are going to be performing without a large expenditure on custom props. While I did enjoy reading it, I have to say that at times it suffers from being too wordy. But then most bizarre magick that is talked about here seems to suffer the same fate. I do think that if you can get your hands on a copy of the Compleat Invocation then do so. It has a ton of good material for all skill levels as well as some practical performing advice sprinkled among it's many pages. |

Mary Tomich's magazine, The Altar Flame, is also an excellent source for material. It has not been reprinted yet, but many hope that it will be some day. Meanwhile, the only source for it would be somebody's collection of individual copies.

However, seeing how someone like Ulf takes a simple effect then wraps it in a fantastic presentation helps me either through opening my eyes to an option I'd never thought of, or even confirming an idea that I'd had, but didn't know would work. The routines are practical, you can find the way to do most of them without the costly props, but the main thing about the book, contained on the first chapter, is about being a storyteller, capable of creating wonder with any simple effect. I’m looking forward to Borodin’s new book in English. |
