Brutus-
You can buy a premium scotch and soda set from Todd Lassen or Roy Kueppers. Kueppers is a real bargain if you want to use standard currency. If you get a set using a centavo, make sure it uses real centavos instead of a "copia" Cheers, Tiki |

This effect is a classic, but please just don't do the routine with which it comes. Use some putpocketing, etc. Develop a great story-line, etc.
I have seen to many "beginner" type magicians just say, "oh look....no more centavo!"

Rob, isn't that the point of the routine?
Just kidding man... I agree with you 100% I know and work with a couple kids who make a living on S&S and pen through dollar tricks (I'm trying very hard to expand their horizons a little!), and thank god they understood the importance of routining, interesting dialog, and having a point The 13 year old has another show coming up, btw. He's doing a cups & balls routine... I'm so proud! Mike |

The best reaction I ever got with Scotch and Soda was when I loaded the real centavo into my friends pants pocket when he wasn't paying attention. I waited about 10-15 minutes and did a "winged silver" routine where the copper and silver coin switch hands quick as a wink, then I vanish the centavo. At the right time, I had him reach into his pocket and TADAAAA!! He just about crapped his pants and it was the best reaction to the routine I ever recieved.

I did the same with my girlfriend and had a fantastic reaction.
On another occasion, with someone else, I had the coin reappear in a glass of water that had been on the table, two feet away, for an hour undisturbed. Later she said she vaguely recalled the plopping sound of the coin dropping into the water when it vanished...The brain is a wonderful tool for editing perceived reality after the event. |

I have this effect and the reactions are wild. This was the first coin trick I ever bought.

I would just like to add on the quality of Bill Palmer's version. Although I've never seem him do it in person I have had the privilege to try it out on a few people through Bill's generousity, and it is simply awesome. It's a great version of Scotch and Soda without any gaffs. Great job Bill!

Which dealers sell the magnetic version? And who manufactures it?

There is a magnetic version by Eddie Gibson called coins unique. it is available in EU and US currency. There is also a sac dollar and us quarter version called miracle coin. You can find all of these at the magic warehouse. I think the miracle coin is a bit more deceptive than the coin unique, but I'm sure opinions vary on this issue. Cheers, Tiki |

Gibson's coin unique in euros (1/0.50), the Tango version (0.50/0.05) and the Kreis Corp version (2/0.50), are all very deceptive and well made. Gibson and Kreis are about the same for quality workmanship. Apparently the Gibson 2 British pound version is no longer made due to its inferior durability.
Not all of these can be used for the traditional s&s trick, however, as to find a third coin small enough to fit the [ can be difficult. Although I am always afraid I'll be busted using a magnetic set, I never have been even when they are inspected and handled briefly by the spectator. Locking sets are virtually foolproof. BTW, don't keep your magnetic versions stuck to a powerful magnet for very long as they can lose their magnetic attraction. I have very demanding spectators, so to increase examinability I try to get the heads/tails sides to match up correctly. Also, as gaffed euro coins are often shinier than normal pocket change, I usually carry all my locking coins with some normal change in my jeans for a few weeks to dull them down a bit. I like to have a number of normal coins in view when I perform at a table. It takes a lot of heat off the gaffed coins in certain effects. Chris P.S. I would never place the importance of gaffed coinage above that of ungaffed techniques, but I will use the former until I am more skilled in the latter. |

I want to thank all of you who have asked me for the Scotch and Soda routine. I receive an average of 3 emails a week asking for the details, and I haven't turned anyone down yet. The only think I have ever asked is for people to keep the location of the item a secret. Since I am still getting requests for it, I know you have all done this. I appreciate this.
I hope all of you on the Café have a great holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

A version I like is using a cheap tin ashtray, some flash paper, and a little of Ammar's product for Card on the Ceiling. The heat from the flash paper allows the real centavo to drop into a glass. You want to use a really thin ashtray and as little of Ammar's product as possible so he heat can do its work.
Unfortunately, I can't remember where I saw this version, so I can't properly credit the person responsible, but it really hammers the people who see it. Scott

Why do I do this trick (and why would anyone do it)? Well, I always get some of the greatest reactions from it, every time. Plus, it's one of the easiest, self-working coin tricks I own. You simply can't mess it up, unless you are really a greenhorn, haven't read the directions, and/or you've never practiced it. The Johnson version is so clean and so examinable in the end, that I cannot imagine the need to perform an ungaffed version. I think that would just be asking for more difficulty than is even necessary. The only advantage I can imagine is that an ungaffed version would allow examination of the coins in the beginning. But, since that's never an issue, I can't even see the point of that. With such a perfect and tight locking mechanism on the Johnson version, I have never had a single person even come close to figuring it out. Most people just never even conceive of the fact that real coins would be destroyed and/or machined in such a way for a trick. So, that's why I do Scotch and Soda.

Using ungaffed coins allows you to choose any coins you wish and makes it totally impromptu with no reset.
However, as you say, the gimmicks are already virtually foolproof. It seems to be more of a complex personal question than a practical one. |

My ungimmicked version is as easy if not easier than the gimmicked version and it happens in the specs hands. Now when I say easy, the equivalent in cards is a DL, and that is more difficult!
I can do mine any time any place in any currency and use specs coins

Yes, I do see the advantage of ungaffed coins allowing impromtu routines, no reset, and use of virtually any type of coin. I'm really not sure why I didn't think of that myself. I guess it's just been a looooong day or something. With that in mind, I'm now interested in learning such a routine myself.

a loose [ can be fixed up by applying a product like "liquid bandage" or a clear nail polish. Unless it was very poorly made, this little bit of thickness does the trick(pun intended). It worked for me.
