Does anyone here have any advice for contacting past clients for work. I know that often times our own mailing lists and database of clients is a great place to start when trying to drum up business. However, as I am not a writer, I am curious if anyone has advice on how to approach a past client and say, "hire me again this year"
Thanks shawn |

How about calling & asking if they are having the party again. If they are, remind them of the good time everyone had & ask if the would like to book you again.
It is a simple method, but it works. |

Here's a trick that works for corporate clients. Call them at night, say 7-7:30 pm when you know you will get to voice mail. Leave a message something like:
"Hi, this is Shawn Griffen at (800) xxx-xxxx, you may remember me from the magic show I did for your company a few years ago. I'm sorry I've been a little negligent keeping in touch, but I thought I should call to let you know about a new show I am doing this year for holiday parties. If, by any chance, you are looking for entertainment, please keep me in mind. I had a great time working with your company in the past, and I'd like to again. You can reach me at 800) xxx-xxxx, or visit my website at...Best wishes for a happy holiday season." If they need entertainment, they will call back. |

Jims advice is great
if it's been a few years you also may want to call to see if your contact still works there just use the receptionist. |

The line I use for voice mail is: "This is Peter The Great, it is important I talk to you, please call me at 555-xxx-xxxx." Sometimes I use my name Peter Lansing instead of Peter The Great.
I have been signing all my letters with Peter The Great as if that was my name, then when I call and the "gatekeeper" asks "who shall I say is calling?" I answer "Peter The Great." I get to talk to the person right away most times. |

I get a lot of repeat shows naturally, but I have used this line to move along the process with clients that don't think to call back on there own.
"Hello, this is Matthew with MDS Magic Productions how are you today! That's great, my calender has been filling up fast this year and I just wanted to warn my past clients to book early if they are interested in having me this year." "If they say we don't know the exact date, but we are thinking of the XX of XXXXXXXX." say "Okay, well I encourage you to give me a call as soon as you know for sure, or if I get a call for that date I will be sure and check with you first." If you haven't heard from them in a while then give them a call and say "I just got a call for the XX of XXXXXXX and I would like to give you the first dibs on the time that you want." They will usually be in contact with you by end of business! M<D>S |

I avoid getting voice mail. I won't leave a message because it's very easy for them to blow you off and never call you. If you want to make a sale, you've got to get them on the phone. Leaving a message is leaving the ball in their court. You have given up your chance and your power. If you call and get the voice mail, hang up. If you can't get to the right person and someone asks if you want to leave a message, say I'll call back later. That's how I handle those situations. If I have a hard time ever getting through, then and only then will I finally leave a message.

How do you handle it when your contact person is no longer with the company? Just ask for the person handling the event planning?
Also how do you get past the receptionist? thanks shawn |

If you have a name, then it's easy to get past the receptionist. You can get a name from one receptionist by asking who's in charge of whatever. Then call back later and ask for so and so and sound like you know them.
