A billet is a (folded) piece of paper. A CT is something that you can do with a billet.

There certainly seem to be few hard rules to live by in mentalism. I know that when I present mentalism and magic in the same program,it works very well. I'm not a big fan of mental magic, although there are some exceptions. I prefer mentalism because I want a specific effect. Mental magic blurs the line between mentalism and magic, often creating some confusion.
I won't even bother to list all of the bad advice on mentalism I've received. There's way too much of that. Ultimately, I have to decide what is right in my performances, not what is right for another performer's act. |

I think that is 100% on the mark and too, there are certain modes of operation that (technique) that some do better and more natural than others. Yes, there are Q&A type bits that can be done without the proverbial Billet. Most require considerable pre-show (which I loathe)arrangements or presenting tons of generalized statements, such as are found in the old "Sensational Mentalism" routine. My good friend Millard Longman has an excellent Q&A concept in which the questions posed are written down and you simply read them... no fumbling! (though the illusion still remains, that you are doing this via Psychic Impression.) Millard, myself and others are likewise adept enough as being "Readers" that we can approach an audience COLD and do a most excellent job establishing the contact and rapport I mentioned previously... but that's something that comes with years of hard work, daily application and loads of denial. I do not and did not mean to be "insulting" to you previously. I just find it a bit odd that someone would be so crass when it comes to one of the key devices so many have profited from. Not everyone is going to be as smooth as Millard, Docc Hilford, Banachek and any number of others I know, when it comes to copping a read or switching this for that. On the other hand, there are ways of working around such and developing modes of operation that best suit the operator. I'm certain you can agree with me on this point as well as the idea that everyone involved with Mentalism needs to have some level on billet work that goes a bit beyond the introductor and base knowledge. AFter all, it can be exceptionally convenient at times. No hard feelings I hope! |

No hard feelings at all, but I DON'T agree with your notion that *everyone involved in Mentalism needs to have some level on billet work that goes beyond the introductor(y) and base knowledge*. I think that one of the things wrong with Mentalism today is that too many of us rely upon the same tools and effects. I encourage all mentalists to break away from the *common knowledge* and to approach things in new and unusual ways. Sometimes we get stuck in a rut by becoming reliant on what has always been done in the past. - entity

While not an advice per se, I think that a very, VERY common mistake these days is to perform effects learnt from videos with the exact patter and lines used by the featured performer.
IMHO, there's nothing most unnatural than try to recite the exact words using on your videos and trying to get fun out of the same punch lines. Videos are a great learning source, but when you learn from a book, you get an overall idea of the effect and you are forced to create your own patter and style (and develop your own punch lines) and that is 100 Times better than unsuccessfully trying to become a clone of the featured performer. |
