I was in Vegas last week and went by the Houdini Lounge in the Monte Carlo. They said they haven't had a Magician there in a long time. Anyone know what happened?

Close seems to have dropped out of the public eye for a bit. I heard it had to do with the death of a friend hitting him really hard. He is starting to do lectures again. I still see some of his stuff on ebay.

MagicChris-
I went to the Monte Carlo back in June or July of this year and he wasn't working then. The bartender at that time, told me the same thing they told you...they haven't had magic in the lounge for a while. They didn't mention why. I asked, but he just shrugged his shoulders. But, AAAAA is correct. Michael is still working the lecture circuit. The IBM ring here in San Diego was working on booking him for this Nov. 1st, but it fell through and now they are trying for an alternate date. I hope they get him to come here, I'd love to see him perform in person. |

Management at the Houdini Lounge had a H U G E budget cut. It is that simple, sadly, and Mike was let go. This was right after the 9/11 disaster when travel to Las Vegas (or anywhere) was severely cut.

Well, I was in the lounge Thursday night and it was PACKED. Had to wait 20 minutes for a seat. The Monte Carlo seems to be doing just fine.
As a matter of fact, all the major hotels had entertainment in their lounges. I don't think they can get away from it. People expect that.

Devil's advocate: If the place was packed, then the management would think there was no need to hire anyone to attract customers.
As Yogi would say, "Nobody goes there anymore it's too crowded."

Good one Pete.
It was packed, because they ahd entertainment. A fellow playing the piano and singing. He was pretty good.

I talked with Mike at the IBM convention. He said that the management wanted to go in a different direction. I believe he said they wanted to put in modern music. Not sure if it was a DJ or what. That would not fit the lounge style. A great loss for those of us who like to see great magic in a close-up environment.

It is a great loss. The Houdini Lounge is beautiful. There should be magic in it!

Binions eh? They are in the news a lot lately because of the murder case associated with the place. Somebody is on trial at the moment for bumping off the owner. Something like that anyway.

The two individuals were accused of murdering Ted Binion, part of the former owner's family. I believe they were acquitted this time around (the previous trial is well-documented in Positively Fifth Street, by Jim McManus), but the male defendant is still in jail after being found guilty on other charges.
Binion's went belly-up earlier this year and was bought by Harrah's. |

Just saw him in Dallas last night. His new lecture is fantastic! Highly recommend that you see it. It will help the way you look at your magic!
