Hey guys,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the tricks on the 1st dvd pretty much 'self-working' tricks? If anyone has the full set, can you tell me what volume he finally gets into teaching a few sleights? Or do I have to get the dvd that's JUST on sleights, cuts, etc, etc? Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. I'm still fairly new to cards and want to get a series that will take me from the 'ground up'. I've heard of Allan Ackerman's series but wouldn't that be too much for someone pretty much just starting out with cards? Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Todd

I would recommend you getting royal road to card magic and daryl's encyclopedia of card sleights over complete card magic

Unfortunately I seem to learn better by watching instead of reading. Although I am going to get RRTCM, but after I've learned a bit more.

I have the complete series and I think it is pretty good, except for the music in between the tricks. Terrible!

Hi Wulfie66,
I also have the full set and find Gerry an excellent teacher. This set will take you from the ground up and is the only card magic series that does this in a graded way. The sleights begin to come into effect in the second volume. The nice thing about the 1st volume is that many of the tricks are still very enjoyable to perform and they get a great reaction too. This gets you started while you learn some of the more challenging routines. I also admire Gerry for performing these mysteries under the remorseless burning glare of the camera with little or no real audience to provide distraction. Good luck. Regards, Paul H |

Thanks for the feedback guys! I've already got Gerry's 'Queens out of Control' and personally LOVE his teaching style and look forward to learning SO much more from him. Thanks again!

Gerry's a master. The first video is mostly self working stuff, and is kind of dry since he doesn't have a live audience. It's got good stuff on it though. The later videos are more pleasant to watch, largely because he has a live audience, and cover a good portion of the "standard base" a card magician should know.
If you're ever in Martinez CA, be sure to stop by Gerry's shop, California Magic and Novelty. He's got a place in the back where you can buy coffee and dessert, and hang out as long as you like without feeling guilty about being in the way of the counter. Andru

Gerry is an excellent magcician and very good teacher. But, these DVD's should be avoided. First of all, many of the effects are given different names ( not by accident ) and some are given the wrongs names. The Braue Reversal is called the Brauery Reverse or some such nonsense.

Gerry isn't the the best teacher in the world, that's what I feel, hes very boring and plain, though he doesdo thorough explantions, the tricks are rather basic and I don like most of them as they are obvious to anyone with half a brain, 4 blue back aces are stuck it the deck, then one at a time they 'come' to the top, but are now red backed. A lot of Gerrys tricks aren't examinable

Gkutrz,
I've seen Gerry perform in his shop MANY times..he is certainly not boring IMHO. I would also bet that most of the laypeople in his shop wouldn't say he was boring either. Smooth yes..boring no.

He isn't boring and is a brilliant teacher...
btw you cant say: don't buy the dvd because he changes names.. like that is a negative point.. I mean I buy the dvd to learn stuff not to learn names--_-.. And no1 can say he is a bad teacher.. when I buy stuff from Oz for example.. he talks in a blur and goes 2 fast sumtimes.. Gerry has great patience AND when he is done I just don't have further questions anymore because he covers near anything.. I think these DVD's and epspescially 5,6,7 r a good buy:) |

Hi,
I recently bought these DVDs too. I think they are pretty good. True, I didn't like the music in between, but I think teaching is really clear. He makes sure you get the stuff. Although one bad thing is I don't like the order of the sleights and cuts in the last two discs. But overall, I think this DVD set is totally worth. I got it for around $50 on ebay new, why not! |

I remember similar debates to these in a thread reviewing this set. Gerry's style is not everyones taste and his performance on these DVD's seems to polarise opinions. I must say that whatever you think of his performing style, he remains an excellent methodical teacher and I would not part with this collection.

Hello, I appreciate all of the discussion surrounding the 7 DVD that I put out called Complete Card Magic. A few quick points of clarification for the purpose of discussion. It is a fascinating thing to do twelve hours of card magic and teach it . Certainly I did not create most of these card mysteries on the DVDs, however, they are my interpretation and take on some of the best card magic ever invented. Also, when you are working with editors and other people, most of which who don't know much if anything about magic at all, you do get a myriad of different names for sleights. Misspellings of names, explanations of moves put in strange orders and such and some things completely left out of the video for one reason or another.
My goal with the set of DVDs was to present some great card magic to the world. Card magic that has served me well over the years and I hope people do enjoy my offering. Magic is intended to be seen live for a real breathing audience. Video of any kind doesn't do justice to the performer or the viewer in experiencing the art of magic. Remember when it comes to magic of any kind, study, practice and get out there and perform. You will develop your own style and find your way. And, most of all have fun! Best thoughts to everyone. |

Hi Gerry,
I have had the extended family round to watch a selection of your DVD's including one from the Lucky Sevens collection I own. They were all amazed and really enjoyed your performance. We had a wonderful evening. Now its my turn to start learning some of these great routines properly and as you say 'get out there and perform'. Many thanks and its good to have you on the Café.
