Hi All,
I am looking for a way to "catch a ghost" so to speak. I want to do something small like Copperfield did in his Barclay House illusion where you hold up the curtain and it turns into a ghost and flies off. Are there ways of doing this with let's say a small white handkerchief? Perhaps laying it flat on the table and then it shoots off and falls back down to the audience? I want to do something like this for my bizarre act, but am not quite sure how to pull it off. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance. Phil Thomas

Phil,
You could make a small zombie gimmick and use a Hanky! instead of a ball, put a dome shape on the end of it. If it was made of say "pipe cleaners" you could crumple the gimmick up inside the hanky and stuff it in a pocket when done. Magickman

Isn't that real close to the standard "Glorpy" handling?

Well the glorp usually stays on the table, and does not rise up to fly about.

Another thought is to use thread.
That way you can toss the hank to the ground first and have it lift its head then stand up to dance, if you use silk you might be able to use ITR. That way you walk away clean! Magickman

I second the idea of using an ITR with silk. Don't forget presentation is everything so put some imagination into the effect and you'll have something special for all your audiences....you won't be forgotten!

Thanks guys. The zombie idea might work, but I want the "ghost" to fly up off the table and dance about and then fall back down to the floor. I don't see how I can make it fly away without me holding onto it if I use the zombie method. IT might work, but then wouldn't the "ghost shape" be vulnerable to be seen? Man, I hate being confused!

Please describe in detail what you want to start with and what you want to have happen.
A pocket handkerchief to start with? Put on the table? Where does it fly "away" TO? Out a window? Up the stairs? Out of the room? The more you can describe, the better we can imagine what you intend and offer you suggestions to realize your goal.

How much access will you have to the room prior to the show? That will determine how much you can rigged the joint up. Also, how contained will the people be? Sitting? Standing? Walking around a little?

What I am thinking of is this.....and I will try to describe in as much detail as I can. I want to display a plain white hanky. I will be telling of ghosts and what not and all of that BS. I want to lay the hanky flat on the table. And then have a "ghostly" shape start to appear right in the center and maybe wiggle about. Then without warning I want it to jump up into the air like it is trying to fly away and have the hanky fall right back down to the table or floor innocent as can be. I hope I made this clear and did not confuse the issue even more. But that is about what I want to happen, or something quite similar. And Reis, to answer your question, the people will be seated around the table or fairly close to it. Also, I plan on doing this in my living room, so I always have access to rigging anything that may be needed.

Hey Phil!
Check out the "flying silk" available from hocus-pocus. Great set-up for a parlor performance. -- Steve |

I have a method for this, but this forum is far too open for me to describe it here.
