Okay, I've put together my stage act. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas, any at all, on a way to finish my dagger head chest? Most of the effects in my act have bonus extras at the end, as a final kicker sort of thing. I wanted to do that with my dagger head chest but I can't for the life of me figure anything out. It can be anything. Whether it be using the knives or something I'm not yet sure. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas. Thanks heaps.

I don't really think there is a kicker ending for it.
What if, and this is probably too impractical for your situation, the daggers are removed, the front of the box is opened and... it has turned into another girl? This would be hard obviously as only the head is covered and the rest of the body in view. You would have to switch earlier in the routine. Just some thoughts. TM |

We had a dagger chest made on uprights for a voodoo scene. All the daggers were removed except the center one.Doors were opened and I would grab the handle and as I pulled up on it there was a flash of fire in front of the open box for a second, and the assistant's head visibly reappeared inside. Very visual and always received lots of ohhs and ahhs from the crowds.

Yeah I knew there wasn't a kicker ending but I just wanted to make one. Not neccessarily a kicker ending but a trick that flows together with the dagger head chest, after iv'e performed it. Thanks heaps for your input.

These things do tend to depend on the context of the act and what else you're doing, but how about having the box opened to reveal she now has a painted face or (easier) is wearing a mask? This is a more practical version of the "different girl" idea.
If it's your final effect, how about using it to finish a continuity gag; do a sucker card trick early on and fail to find the correct card. Throughout the act, make several attempts to find the card between tricks, failing each time. Finally, having performed your dagger head chest finale, you open the case to reveal that your assistant now has a playing card in her mouth; could this one finally be the chosen card? If you really want to have a twist on the end, make that one the wrong card too, snatch it from her lips and throw it to the back of the stage in a rage, at which point a large banner of the correct card rolls down into view, leaving you with a nice backdrop and moment of closure on which to take your bows. |

I think people, no matter if you do close-up or not, need to remember what Professor Vernon said:
"Confusion is not magic". Costume changes at the end of the sub trunk have added nothing to the effect, and now 99.99% of magic doesn't even know the VASTLY superior Houdini routine. A "kicker" ending to the dagger chest weakens the effect of the chest. Read David Ginn's Arrowhead routine sometime to see how the effect can be clear, and a build to a good finish. If you can find the long out of print "Art of Illusion" by Will Ayling, you can find a very interesting routine for the chest. However, as I prefer the Ginn routine, I have always prefered Arrowhead to the Chest. |

I use Murder incorporated with a vic..,er, volunteer from the audiance. I play it for laughs, not serious. The last sword, the one thru the top of the head, always gets stuck for some reason. I pull and yank and struggle until it comes loose. At that point I either pull out am handed a red silk. I wrap this around the blade as it slides out. It looks like I am wiping the blood (?) off as it comes off. My face look like something really gross happend. My assitant takes the sword by the silk and walks off holding it away from herself as if she did not want it to drip on her. Let me be clear, THERE IS NO BLOOD!!. It's a gag!
I use the scoutmaster or the school principle or the birthday childs dad, or the ceo, or, well you get the idea. Please don't tell me about the evils of doing a trick like that for kids. We are not talking 3 & 4 yearolds. These kids see worse on tv and video games every day. It always gets a great reaction. This may not be the kicker you r looking for, but it works for me. Good luck w/ your show

In Paul Osborne's Illusion Systems Book Four (page 36) there is an illusion that is similar to Dagger head chest called The Flaming Alter of Mochica. If you read this it could give you an idea for a "kicker ending." let's just say that the girl loses more than her head.

Andrew Gladwin did this on lance Burton's young magicians show case. Where a thought of card appeared on the inside of the ffront panel thingy.
