Hello !
I have the radar deck, know how it works, but... How do you practice such a thing ? You need several people at the same time (isn't hard to find), but you can't do it for strangers because they are potential customers and you don't want to fail while trying out. FOr friends and family you can do it, but only once, because after several times they might "get it". Am I only making it difficult for myself and should I just jump into the deep and perform it anyway ? Perhaps this is a silly question, but stuff like this bothers me. Have a nice day,

I get your point, and don't think this is a silly question.
(- actually there is no such thing as a silly question, - only silly answers from time to time!! :o) ) IMHO the only thing to do, is to learn the secret forewards, backwards and in your sleep, and go out and do it. The worst thing that could happen, is that you missed on a card or two, - and so what?? Worst case, guessing even just one would impress many people. I doubt it that this would happen, though! How I see it, is that this is a kind of routine you HAVE to practise for a real audience to get it. Don't do this in an important performance thoug! Sven

Sven,
Here is a way to get into the Radar Deck with strangers. You are talking and they find out you are a mentalist. They want to see you do something, so maybe you do a quick center tear or Swami effect. So they want to know how you learned this? Here is my answer. "Every since I was a kid, I always was interested in magic and mystery. I used to see magicians on TV, but I didn't have any books or magician friends, so I had to make up everything. I used to take a deck of cards and just let someone look at some and think of one. Let me try it for a few of you right now." Then I go into it. By basing your story on what you did as a kid you can use the questioning process a little more openly explaining this is how you started out. See? You are playing the part of yourself as a little boy and can use that to your advantage. Just another way to go. Richard |

Mr. Osterlind, this is just splendid... Using the innocence of a young child (yourself in another dimension) to ask the questions more openly.
Thanks !

I'm not sure if you just mean the timing to get maximum effect, or if you have trouble 'remembering' the method.
As to the method, I made up my own deck with cards that make the method very easy for me to remember. Trying not to give the method away, just think of one side red- odd, black even and then reverse it for the other. If you don't understand, PM me. I don't know if Richard's commercial decks follow this pattern, but it makes the routine actually doable for me (memory challenged) I just did the routine last night and one woman (the hostess) didn't remember her card, but the routine still blew the crowd away, especially naming the almost thought of card. Thanks Richard!! |

One way I used to practice it (I practically know the secret by heart now, though I do practice time to time). Is take a punch of post it notes and write on them, fold them up and mix them in a hat. Draw them out so then its like the 'people' feeding you the info and then you try and get the cards. Its hard to explain without really giving away the secret.
Thanks! Scott B.

I know what you mean, Scott... And I'll try it. And Drosenbe... Thanks for the tip !
I've tested the Radar Deck several times today. One person thought she saw the secret. What do you say in such a situation. Of course, I still DID what I had to do to get that thought out of her mind, but what should be your attitude in such a situation ?

In the post by Mystery, "One person thought she saw the secret". Osterlind's reply that you must show only 2 or 3 cards at a time is important. Also, be careful to keep the two packets of cards squared up as you fan from hand to hand. Sloppy fanning might leave a card revealed in the right-hand packet as you continue fanning. This could be the cause of serious problems like you described.

Isn't making a "mistake" the mentalist perfect out? I always treat most display/actions with the possible outcome not working. If you use this approach this will reduce the stress of producing a positive results.

Taking Richard's comment a step further, I simply spread a few, then stop and hold them up for the spectator to get one. I don't spread them as I'm showing them. I find this works well for me.

Oh, but I'm VERY careful when I spread them. By the way, I later found out that the lady who thought she saw the secret was married to a magician... I feel much better since...
But did I mention that somebody saw the ace of clubs ? Mentalism keeps surprising me

Another way to take some of the anxiety out of performing this superb effect is to do two things.
1) Start off by performing it the way it was orignially published and performed on "Challenge Magic." Use three spectators. Say that in order to reduce the chance of duplication, the first person should think of a red card (he sees the first bank), the second person should think of a black card (also from the first bank) and the third person should think of a red card (this one from the second bank). In this version you don't have to ask the color of the card the spectators are thinking of because you controlled that from the beginning. A little less to think about when first trying the effect out. Then, as you get more comfortable, progress on to the "advanced" version which is on Osterlind's Mind Mysteries, and the new booklet which comes with the effect if you buy it. I should note, though, that Richard generously shows how you can make up your own deck. 2) Make up a small crib sheet and glue it to the inside flap of the card case. You'll probably never have to look at it, but just knowing you have access to the information you need if you experience a brain freeze is another way to get comfortable with the effect. Best, L.
