I am putting forward this suggestion as the process of banning certain members for, we assume, serious breaches of Café rules, seems very private and behind closed doors.
Why not a list of miscreants and the reason for their expulsion. Not only does it satisfy the curiosity of fellow members, but it would highlight what is and what is not permissable with these forums. As someone with an interest in mentalism I have noted the recent departure of two or three notables. The only reason I have known they were dearly departed is someone else mentioning it within a thread. Or maybe someone thinks someone else has been chucked out. A record of disciplinary action would clear up such speculation, and be the hallmark of an open and democratic forum.

We apprreciate your concern and thankyou for your input however, the airing of "dirty laundry" so to speak is not done on the Café. Banning is conducted as a private matter between management and the individual member.
Banned members are notified privately of the reasons for the action. Arbitrary banning is never done and only those who repeatedly violate rules, grossly abuse the priviledge of using the Café, or ignore warnings of the staff are banned. Discussing who has been banned or why does nothing for the topic or the Café and does not support the motto of "Magicians helping Magicians".

Thanks, Dave, although I think we'll agree to differ.
I'm not encouraging the airing of anyone's dirty laundry, and I'm sure the Café doesn't enter into a ban lightly, particularly if the wrongdoer has been a member for some time, but as an ardent supporter of freedom of information, I just feel the current procedure feels overly secretive and counter productive.

Perhaps, but I would have to agree with Dave.
As an outsider to the subject of magic (though I've been "accused" of working magic with the scripts here ), I would agree that making that information public would be counter-productive. I can at least tell you that the reasons for banning that I have seen include bootlegging, excessive rudeness or foul language/vulgarity, obvious (even subtle) and repeated attempts to circumvent Café policies, flaming/defying staff, unauthorized advertising, PM spamming, stalking (yes, you read that right), and even death threats. Or, just having the initials ML. (Sorry, inside joke. ) There are other reasons as well, if those aren't enough. Obviously, we aren't going to make public who has been banned for what reason. Suffice to say we (the Café staff) investigate everything that is brought to our attention and take whatever action we feel is necessary to take care of the problem, whatever that may be. To be absolutely frank, it's not the business of the general membership to know who's been banned and for what offense. And, as much as I also support freedom of information, that does not apply to a privately owned web site. But that's another topic entirely, and not really appropriate for discussion here at the Café.

First, thank you for taking the time to voice your concerns. We try very hard to please all our members and we certainly have nothing to hide here. That said, I must agree with both Dave Scribner and Gene regarding the reasons behind our thinking. I will also add that it's just not professional to chastise or ridicule folks in front of everyone, no matter how tempting that may be at times. Though I will point out that often some of these folks really do deserve it but two wrongs do not make a right as they say. Regarding WHAT IS and WHAT IS NOT allowed here, that is easy to answer because it is VERY CLEARLY explained in these forums. Thanks again for participating.
