After I got back from the NY coin seminar, I had so much material with which to learn. I had my own notes I had taken, lecture notes from Roth, Latta, Gallo, and Rubinstein, videos and DVDs. I wanted to be able to do everything we had been shown, and much of what was in the notes and videos. However, I know this isn't practical, and probably not even wise. As has been said so many times before, it's better to master a few (or one) routines or effects than to do many poorly.
This brings me to my question, if you had to choose one effect or routine to spend the rest of your magical life in mastering, what would it be and why? I am more interested in the why. Would you choose an effect because of the enjoyment you get or for the oohs and aahs it gets when performed? Would you choose one because of the ease or challenge of the sleights and moves involved? For the misdirection and psychology involved? I do not yet have it narrowed down to one, but I will share my thoughts. Creating a routine based on Ramsay's Cylinder and Coins or Roth's The Planet appeal to me because of the sleights, but mostly because of the lessons in directing the audience's attention and timing. I also would be willing to spend time mastering a routine based on Mike Gallo's The Coin Act because it involves productions, coins across and vanishes, many good lessons for a coin magician. Yet after watching Mickey Silver's demo DVD again, I could see spending a lifetime mastering the retention vanish. Please share what you would be willing to spend a lifetime mastering, and please explain why. Thanks for your thoughts, Gene |

Yo Gene, how's it going! If I had to limit myself, I would look to find an effect that I would be able to do almost anytime (i.e. - no gaffs, unless you always have it with you), could be done for a few or a lot of people (i.e. - satisfy my performing conditions), and would generate maximum impact. And, after that I had better have a good followup that follows the same parameters, because often you can't do just one!
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

I can't comment exactly which effect to choose when one should choose a single coin-effect, unfortunately I neither have witnessed the NYC seminar.
BUT., I can say what my own goal is re coins.. You see, there is an incredible lot of very very good coinwork available to practise.. My personal favourite will always be the *Coins through the table* -Al Baker premise( 4 coins, not HPC) for various reasons.. One of them is, it is a dynamic piece of magic.. BUT, and this is a big BUT, it has a drawback..also one is able to do it stand-up at a table, It still needs a table So what I would suggest and prefer, is a coinroutine, that is independant of a table, a coinroutine that can be done anywhere, anytime, without the use of a table.. Though, as one always has to have a pectator to do any magic , it is OK to use a specs cupped hand for a such coinroutine.. So, to be able to do your coinmagic under any condition, find one that can be done under those conditions and doesn't need the use of a table.. Just my thoughts, unfortunately a lot of great coinmagic falls away from that premise..and THAT I dislike, still I think the theory to be able to do coinwork -strong coinmagic- without the use of a table is a good one.. This doesn't mean, one NOT should use and practise coinmagic needing a table.. I'll always do my CTTT f.ex. but one should have an equally strong routine that doens't depend on a table.. Just my thoughts.. 3-Fly -as much as I love to watch it- isn't in my *theory* a such good effect for normal audiences, as, as far as I can se, it lacks spec involvement in the handling, it is *just* a *display* piece of magic and doesn't *touch* them as hard as it should.. Therefor, f.ex. I like the C/S/B to be done by use of THEIR hands, but somehow, sometimes, I think it is limited a bit by visuality re a larger crowd of specs..but at a table, in a close-up situataion it is Ok.. I don't claim my thoughts re 3 Fly are correct, but I just *have* them the way I described..

Gene, you have some good items there to choose from. You spoke of my coin act...that is a good choice as it embodies many principles in magic. As for me...it would be Ramsays Coins and Cylinder as that is to coins what the cups and balls is to magic. Also, another routine I would spend lots of time with is Roth's Purse Glass and Coins routine...that trick alone embodies many lessons in coin magic...magic in general! But Mike R. and Werner do make strong points about learning anywhere anytime effects...never get caught with your pants down! And Werner, Larry Jennings published a fantastic coins through table with no table...well worth studing! But if you really want to stand out....find something no one is doing and work on it...shape it...mold it form it to become you. Then, and only then will you have something unique and memorable!

Coins Through the Table never fails to kick butt, and for me is the perfect sitting at the table routine. Many good versions are out there (Gene, you have one by Gallo and two by me in your stuff). I like to do my three coin production/vanish sequence (Triple Play), a good coins across, and a spellbound routine for impromptu stand up. You have more choices in formal presentations, so my advice is to learn what really struck you the first time you saw it (Like for me, Roth's sleeve routine is incredible, and Gallo's Coins and Cylinder routine is pretty amazing as well!)
