I think he is asking if there are any pros besides those the public or us fellow performers already know of such as D Brown etc. Of course he is full time. Ian is probably asking about the average guy that pays all his bills doing mentalism but is not all over the media.

I earn my living from mentalism, it supports my studies at university and once I finish I shall continue to work full time.
I perform close up, cabaret, walk around and house parties in the main. Kind thoughts, Kennedy

On 2004-11-10 06:47, Ian Broadmore wrote: Well, yes you can... but as to getting paid for performing... especially without a "Name" or, should we say "recognized Label" you're pretty much up the creek. Too, you need to consider what you mean by working in mentalism full time. I happen to write pretty much full-time on this particular subject and magic as a whole. A major portion of my income is generated through my books & manuscripts. I also have a handful of effects either on or pending market release. These two vehicles however, at but one way that I (and others) generate income. When it comes to the idea of "Performing" we again find an bit of a paradox. My "day job" as it were, is working as a tableside Reader... that's right, I'm out there hustling the public and taking them for all their worth as a Psychic (and if you believe that, you haven't a clue when it comes to doing this side of the work.) Add to this those one or two private parties I do each week and, if I'm lucky and all is going well in my life, the one or two corporate deals that come down the pike each season. The bottom line is, YES you can make a living as a Mentalist but NO, It's not easy. You need to build yourself and your reputation slowly, yet agressively. When I'm doing my work as a Reader @ the local Starbucks, I am also amusing patrons with some subtle demonstrations here and there, so as to keep the local talk going about the Psychic down the street. Why? Well, I can do things the other six full-time Readers in town can't e.g. I become the better known and more trusted counselor in the area. In a town this small, competition can get a bit "tight", if you know what I mean. These demonstrations also allow me to have an excuse to put brochures into the hands of those gathered, that tell them about my home party services, etc. Therefore, when things are slow and I have no one walking in for a Reading, I'm still "Working" and seeking to make things a bit better for myself. Now I do have a few disadvantages most aren't dealing with. For an example, I cannot take certain engagements because the facility does not have an elevator... kind of hard to get up the stairs in a wheelchair, ya know? Then again, this is why I do the day gig the way I do it. The bottom line is, even without working a full-time schedule there are ways to "perform" and still make a better living than you would flipping burgers at the local McDonalds or Wendy's. It might not be your current "vision" of where you want to be and what you wish you were doing, but it is a stepping stone in the right direction. I'll not go into a great deal of detail but I have a book now facing final edit, that should be at the press (all going well) by Spring. This tome has been over six years in the making and is over 500 pages in length. But, it gives to the serious minded, a map of sorts. It takes you from the most base levels of becoming a Reader and reveals how to leap-frog from that starting point into alternate, albeit low level, venues. This tome will be the first in a series of comparable encyclopedic works and should be on the market by the fall of 2005... I will keep you abrest of things. In the meantime, you may want to check out http://www.A2productions.com and the Psychic Technologies books. Though the subscription side is not available at present, you can purchase the ebooks independently for around $40.00 each (Contact Andy Leviss or Andi Gladwyn if you have any questions.) These books were created to help individuals, like yourself, get started and see how to market their talents and thus, generate a fair income with less effort. Hope these insights help! |

Osiris, thank you for taking the time to give us a first hand testimony and insight about the mentalism/reading market. I went to the website aforementionned though and the link didn't work. Is the url correct please?
