My 8 year old daughter has expressed an interest in magic. For Christmas she indicated to me she would like a "magic set". Any ideas on a good (not cheesy) set. The most recent issue of "The Linking Ring" had three sets advertised on the back cover, but I know nothing of their content or quality. Any suggestions or reviews?
Any alternative ideas for a magical gift for an 8 year old if the kits aren't a good idea? |

The kits are you refer to are by Fantasma. Though I have not actually seen the contents, I have seen the packaging up close; it is impressive looking. It seems to be high quality for a beginning set.
Also, scholastic books at one time had a magic club where kids received a new magic kit every few weeks. The best I can recall, they were not too bad. However, I do not know if they still have this program in place. |

Thank you for your reply Jim. Was hoping to get a bit more feedback, but I figure most of the magicians on these threads would not be purchasing this type of kit.

I cannot really add much to what Jim already said. He reflected my thoughts almost exactly. I have not seen these Fantasma Magic Sets, but judging from the ads they seem to be better than most in that catagory. I believe Simon Lovell is affiliated with the company.
I wish I could help more. Regan

Just to add a slightly different angle.....
You could get her a few good single items. I would suggest things like - *Traffic light trick (think that's what it's called, uses 2 cards, great trick) *Hot rod *Svengali deck *TT and silk That's a nice little selection, but if you want to go a little more expensive you could throw a Tenyo in there as well. The cut and restored rope from Tenyo is easy to do but very visual, there are a lot of good Tenyo tricks available that would be great for 8 year old. Well, I hope that has been of some help. Many of the dealers on ebay put kits together from various things they have in the shop. Some of them contain some pretty good stuff and very good prices. They always have descriptions and pictures of the stuff. If you look closely and know what your looking at/for, You can get some nice magic. The aren't pre- packed kits per se, just a collection of individual tricks/effects, but you can get some nice items and put them some kind of box or case that you make up or buy yourself.

Thank you all for your support. I am doing some research on the Fantasma. I also like the idea of creating my own "set". The Tenyo idea was great too. Can't believe I didn't think of it.

There are several good sets out there for kids. The Fantasma sets are pretty good. I think it depends on the age of the child. You don't want to get more advanced items for an 8 year old. Maybe get her several different items and even a magic book (i sell a great one) for kids.

My first set was a marshall Bordein set and they are still out there and are still quite good. They have different ones and rnage in price but they are good magic and the kids can enjoy and learn in a great hobby.
