Hi! I'm doing a show at my sons daycare and it would really please him if I could produce a bunny. The problem is that I'm allergic to them. Does any one know if I took a allergra and had my wife load and unload the rabbit if this would work? The local pet shop is a half a block away and said I could "rent" a bunny for 1 hour. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

It's hard to predict this without more details. A lot depends upon how severe your allergy is. It would definitly help to stay away from the bunny as much as possible. Also you could ask the pet store to make sure the bunny is brushed and cleaned before you pick it up from the store. Also you could ask them, or your wife to rub the bunny down with a slightly damp cloth. This will remove some loosened hair and some of the allergens. If you are very allergic, a reaction will probably be trigger no matter what you do, but you might can reduce it's severity by taking some precautions. It really just depends on whether or not you want to suffer through it.
Also, have you ever magically produced a bunny before. There is practice to consider. And with only an hour to do it, you may have a reaction before the show starts. It wouldn't be a good idea to do it without at least a little rehearsal time, IMO. I suggest doing this. Since you have easy access to the rabbit, rent it for an hour of rehearsal at least several days before showtime. That way you can familiarize yourself with handling the rabbit, practice the routine, and see how bad your allergy reaction is going to be. Also you could take some allergy medication and see if it helps. Hope this helps. Regan

How much they hitting you up for one hour Don?
I know around Easter, breeders are plenty busy letting their rabbits out for photos. Regan is right, I am currently training my 2 month old dwarf to get use to dark cramped spaces, kids, noise, balloons etc. The breeder is still in contact with me, even travels to Rhode Island to sell his rabbits. Rabbits can put up a fierce fight when you first try to cram them into a production apparatus. My 11 month old dwarf hates bags. My baby is just starting in a bag and he may change his attitude later. I want to produce him today from an Abbotts bag for family using a wad of silks. We shall see:::) Happy Thanksgiving to all and to all a good day:)

Hi Don,
What method are you planning to use to produce it? I am also allergic to rabbits and use two of them in my show. My wife does the loading and I only hold one for a very brief minute on stage after it is produced (using a standard doves to rabbit) and then pass him straight away to her. I also have a Tora Strange Cage where I never have to touch the rabbit, she appears inside the cage while my wife holds it. |

I was going to produce the rabbit with a balloon to bunny production box. All of you have given me a lot to think about. I've never had a rabbit and have been preoccupied about what my allergic reaction would be and not the fact that the bunny will take time to get accustomed to the box. I think I'll omit this effect for now. Thanks to everyone that responded.

Don,
Richard suggested that you ask a doctor. So I did that for you. (My wife is a doctor!) She said that the easy way out is to use a guinea pig instead. Your allergy is unlikely to include both. Good Luck! Bob Magic By Sander |

Thanks Bob! I never thought of a guinea pig. That might work.

Don,
Thanksgiving did you know there may be a guinea pig in your future? Magic is the land of opportunity! Lucy (my wife) will be proud of you. Kids will learn something new too! You're a hero! (Wait until you hear the funny "bong-ing" noise they make.) Bob Magic By Sander |

How about a chinchilla Bob? Would you ask Lucy if someone were allergic to rabbits, would they be likely to be allergic to chinchillas also?

Regan,
Lucy said that using chinchillas may be a workable solution. Give it a try. Bob Magic By Sander |

Thanks Bob. I am slightly allergic to rabbits but it is quite tolerable at the moment. My wife has become pretty severly allergic to rabbits. I am just thinking about alternatives in case it becomes necessary.

There is a magazine that I just found on the newstand called CRITTERS USA. It mentions that chinchillas are very non-allerginic, making them good pets for those that are allergic to dog or cat dander. |

I've found that taking Vitamin C in large doses takes care of my allergies to pet dander. I typically take 1000 to 1500 mg a day and considerably more if I have an upper respiratory infection. Treating the infections with Goldenseal Root, 500 mg three times a day for a week, seems to make the Vitamin C work better. Always consult your doctor before taking supplements. I no longer use antihistimines or asthma inhalers because the supplements work so well.

I booked a Easter show this Saturday and they wanted a rabbit. I really wanted to do the show but my rabbit allergies really scared me. What did I do? I rented a rabbit for 7.00 at the local pet store. They picked out one that had a terrific disposition. I took a Clariton and brought along my wife to load and unload the bunny. I used Wolf's Magic excellent Funhouse. The bunny was a huge hit and I didn't suffer one sniffle! Maybe there is hope after all for all of us that are allergic to rabbits!

I was once told that animal allergies actually come from their saliva. They lick themselves (to bathe themselves) and their saliva is actually what contains the allergens. Thus, their hair becomes full of allergens.
I am also allergic to my rabbit, but I started bathing him regularly, especially before shows, and it's working like a charm. Just hold him under luke-warm running water in the sink, then dry him off in a towel or with a hair dryer. It takes 5 minutes. My rabbit didn't like it the first two times, but now it seems like he almost likes it! He'll still work to lick himself dry, but the allergies will be much less severe. If I know I'm two of three shows in a Saturday, it's worth giving him a bath that morning. If you don't have time to give him a bath, even wiping him down with a damp cloth will help immensly. Wipe him down with a wet washcloth, then dry him with paper towel, and you'll be able to handle him a little more without the allergies kicking in so fast. Hope this helps, good luck! |

Donsmagic:
Allergens (as are found in dander) do not go from saliva to hair. Dander does not come from the hair of cats, dogs and rabbits, it comes from the skin. ALL furry (and feathered) animals have dander that can cause allergic reactions in some people. It makes no difference if the hair is long or short or fine or thick. It is not coming from the hair, it simply starts there on the way to the floor, carpet and air. Pets that clean themselves often by licking, simply help the dander stick to the hair longer and it may help it in getting to your hands. No breed of dog or cat is free of allergen causing dander. This includes guinea pig and gerbils. The only reason you MAY have less of a reaction with very small furry animals, is that they are smaller. Unlike human dandruff, you can not see dander from these animals. It is so small that it becomes airborne. Cats have the most potent dander (Fel d 1) but horses are the champions of dander. Allergists will tell you (the ones that keep up on things) that the urine of some animals also caries some risk of allergens. I did a birthday show last year for an allergist (her daughter) and she asked me to bring the rabbit, but would I please use a vacuum cleaner on her (my rabbit, not her daughter) just before coming, I did, and we had no problem. She had her daughter wash her hands after she petted the rabbit as well. Bob |

Very interesting Bob. I still think that the reason my allergies didn't flare up is because I never touched the rabbit. My wife loaded him and when the balloon popped and the rabbit appeared, she removed him from the prop. Before I set up the show, I stayed well away from the rabbit as a preventitive. Also I'm sure the allergy medication helped too.
