Hi everyone,
I have finaly bought 2 rabbits, one of wich I will use in my shows for children. Already have the production box, the routine seems to be fine. The only problem that I keep thinking about (I have nightmares about it...) is that the rabbit might at some point poop or pee in a childs hands after the show... Does anyone have any experience with this type of occurence, and do you have any suggestions to stop it from happening (asside from "don't let kids handle the rabbit!"). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Louis Jutras |

I think the number one fear is the rabbit struggling and scratching a child.
Anyway several magicians have suggested that you put it in a hat and allow the children to hold the hat for pics. You may want to put some paper towel in the hat to absorb any liquid if required. My Rex doesn't go when in someones grasp, but paper is always a good idea. Get a hat just for this, and the bunny will have a familiar place, and be less frightened with the kids. The bunny usually pops his head out to see what is going on and if he tries to hide in the bottom, then he is ready to go back into his carrier.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Thanks Magic!
That certainly sounds like a good Idea. With the rabbit in the hat, the kids can still touch it (gently!), and not have any mess in their hands. I guess it certainly will help to avoid scraches too. Although I told that clipping the rabbits nails is a good solution for that. It is the same as clipping a dog's nails. I don't know if my raabits would like that any more than dog does, but it might be worth finding out! Louis |

They don't love it, but you have to get it done. Some vets do it for $10 if you are worried, you can have it done once to see how easy it is to do. Have someone else hold the rabbit upside down helps. Clipping helps keep the nails from in-growing, breaking etc, but still leaves plenty of nail for scratching. Get a septic pencil in case you do get one too short.
Do not consider declawing, it is unnecessary and I think cruel. I also had my bunny fixed to reduce the territorial behavior, and pets always do better, live longer without those naughty bits. Less chance for problems related to the sex organs over the life of the pet. Check out the House Rabbit Society for full info on pet bunnies. http://www.rabbit.org/

Well the simplest solution is to not feed the rabbit or don't put it in the kid's hands. But seriously it is one of those things that happens like dove dropping.
I would do a couple of things. First control when you water and feed the rabbit before show. Second, limit the actual handling of the rabbit. Sitting it on the table top where the child can pet it is a good option. Third I would have some little handy wipes with a waterless hand sanitizer like Purel. Nuetering the animal is a good idea and will help even out the disposition. Though I remember a male collie dog we had that kept running off to visit female dogs in the area. We had him neutered but the silly thing didn't know any better and still went out on consultation calls.

Hi,
Just a note but there really should be no reason to get your bunnies nails clipped if the bunny has sufficient time out of its hutch to roam unless it is a house bunny then carpets ext reduce the natural wear down of nails phillip |

Thank you all for you replies!
Magic J., I absolutely agree with you, declawing is not a good thing to do, and I certainly will not do it to my rabbits! Phillip, the weather her in Canada can get pretty cold during winter time. I can not imagine myself letting them out in the cold, so I guess you say they are "house bunnies". Summer time might be a different story, but I expect my two kids will still be taking them first thing in the morning to play with them while waching television ( talk about divided attention! ;-) ). I will hold my rabbit and let the kids pet it, or I will put it in a hat while they pet it. I do not let the kids hold the hat either, because of possibly dropping it. I will make an exception for a picture with the rabbit in the hat, but I am in it too, and I hold my hand under the hat.
I have never had a rabbit to Poop on me while holding it in my hands for the kids to pet. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I didn't know this could be a problem. Don't ever let a child hold the rabbit in their hands. Manuel is right, they are likely to drop it and get scratched if the rabbit struggles. Regan

I agree. I hold the rabbit in a hat and let the kids pet him briefly after production and back he goes in his pet carrier. I also turn my rabbit around so his backside is facing the kids just in case they touch his face and he bites.

I have nice Travel Cages with an opening in the TOP. The kids are able to reach in and pet the Rabbit & ChinChilla. I like the idea of the bunny in the hat for a picture with the family.

Wellington also has one of these carriers....I don't see any around these parts that is in size small.
I use a cloth carrier from Petsmart that is pretty small. I placed carpet in the bottom plus one of those blue diaper type linings under that just in case of an accident.
