I've been working my way through Bobo's, using Canadian coins, for the most part, since they're readily available.
Now, as I understand it, Canadian twonies are only slightly smaller than an American half dollar -- I believe the difference is only 1 mm. And yet, Bobo says a half dollar should be a size most people can back palm. Well, there's no way my hands are going to back palm a twonie. I've got no problem back palming a silver dollar sized palming coin, but the twonies are just too darned small, which means half dollars would be as well. I know my hands are big, but I didn't think they were THAT big! So my question is this: are most people able to back palm a half dollar? Or did Bobo have really tiny hands? |

Hi!
Good question, indeed. I don´t know about Bobo's hands, but I know how I fiddle about this nasty palming. Though I can keep the coin in the back palm position as well as in the corresponding front finger hold, it will nearly always slip away when I curl the fingers in and begin with the revolving motion. The motion itself is "blocked" by the joints of the two moving fingers. Must be a matter of coin size.. Ever tried a silver dollar? My way around this is to use the Tenkai Pinch or the back thumbpalm. Or any back concealment at all. So you're not alone! Regards, Spherie |

Barry, Americans were smaller in Bobo's day. The popularization of fatty, genetically-altered fast food and American Football has, over the decades, enlarged the subspecies and made many things stated in Bobo's odd, or just plain wrong. I know a few people who can comfortably perform a full backpalm with a half dollar, but most of them are Asian women, without much interest in fast food or football.
This theory of cultural evolution fails to explain why the American dollar has steadily gotten smaller, nor does it explain Jay Sankey.

Personally I use the Tenkai or Goshman as it is sometimes called. The coin is supported by the pinky.
Other people find the position made popular by Up in smoke.(between the two middle fingers) Harris

I have been reading Bobo for awhile now. When I started practicing the back palm I could never get it, I dropped more coins on this than I have anything else but before i knew it I got it perfect. And it is a half dollar and after frequent use of this I can now almost get quarters. Although my hands are kinda small I believe if you just keep practicing you will get it.

I don't have large hands, but there is no way I could backpalm a half dollar. The diameter of the coin is more than a quarter-inch less than the width of my middle and ring fingers together and any attempt at holding one in place with my pinkie and index finger results in contortions that are as much a give-away as a flared pinkie is in a poorly executed classic palm. Back clips/pinches seem preferable to me anyway, since they allow at least some of the fingers to be spread slightly in a more natural manner.

The back palm is a pretty tough sleight to accomplish, BUT you have to remember, the backpalm is not necessarily for close up performances.. (though it is used by those that can do it well).. If I were close up to someone, I could never pull a backpalm off,
unless it was only for a split second and my hand was in motion.. I can backpalm a half easily, and rotate it from front to back and front to back, but I cannot straighten my fingers out all of the way or the coin will pop out.. if I am performing for a group of people, and I am several feet away from the closest person, I could probably pull it off.. just like cards, backpalming 8 cards and producing 1 by 1 would be a stage trick, unless you are very good, then close up would be an option as well.. I have not tried silver dollars, but I know that close up, with half dollars, It is clearly visible that the middle and ring fingers are sticking up while the 1st and pinky are set back.. anyway, just some thoughts..
