My version of the Sankey/Himber/Rosenthal click pass count thing is a bit of both; the coins are clearly seen to be dropped into the hand, and all are clearly heard to 'clink' when they land. And it's surefire, too...
Take care, Ian |

Just a few points: Re: "Only magicians and idiots count out groups of less than five things." Not true, unless you never go to a shop and receive change. Buy a £1 item in the UK with a £5 note and you get £4 counted into your hand very carefully. Civilians are used to doing this many times daily. Magicians aren't because we treat coins as objects of metal, and not as things of value. Which moves us on to: "Nobody cares how many gigs you work. It doesn't make your opinion more or less valuable ok?" I'm afraid I do care, as this tells me the experience of the performer in entertaining the public. This form of experience is much more important to me than that of entertaining magicians, as (like Harper) I get paid to perform for the public on a semi-regular basis. Anyway. I try to avoid counts for the reasons Owen states, so this has been an interesting thread. However, there's a count+steal in Bertram's "Passing The Half Bucks" (I think) in "Stars Of Magic" that sounds okay (in a metal-on-metal sense), and handles well (for me). I don't know if this helps, Owen, but it might be worth a look. Finally, another reason this has been an interesting thread is that it's highlighted why I hardly ever post here. Cheers Ian |

I played with a 3 as 4 count as follows.
3 in right hand. First to left palm. Second on first. clink. Shift LH so second coin slides off first to fingertips. False pass third really closing LH enough to cause second to fall back on first. clink. Toss 4th(?)clink. Hope this helps. Owen! All you asked for was a count! |

I posted my original note because Owen wanted to perform a false count. I mentioned that Troy Hooser's book provided a list of maybe half a dozen counts. I was fed up with posts by fellows who criticised him for wanting to try a false count.
My hope was to make it clear that false counts work for me, and I use them when I work for people who pay me to entertain them. My working experience has taught me that Jay Sankey's false count is very practical. If I wanted to go fishing, I would listen to someone who actually fished a particular lake, rather than someone who merely wrote about fishing. I no longer wish to participate. I sincerely wish the very best of luck to you all! |

I'm sticking to the position offered earlier:
1) When there is a context in presentation where the action is MOTIVATED that someone wants to discuss 2) When there is a particular look/feel to the way they handle coins I will (usally) offer what help I can to support the efforts of the person asking.
...to all the coins I've dropped here
