I wonder if any of my friends in the States can explain this and put my mind at rest.
I was watching an episode of 'Frasier' on Paramount this afternoon. The opening scene began like this - 'Scene One - Café Nervosa. Frasier is sat when Roz arrives and sits with him. Roz: Frasier, thank God you're here. Frasier: Why, what's wrong, Roz? Roz: My book club meets tonight and I haven't read the book. Frasier: Oh my, that is a literary 911! ' Now my first thought about the 'literary 911' line was of surprise at a bad taste gag in a quality programme such as Frasier even more surprising considering the programmes personal sad losses on that dreadful day. Then I thought 'hang on,this programmes on Paramount.' I checked on the web and found that this episode was made in 2000 !!!! Can anyone explain what a '911' was before the awful events of September 11th ? It's really freaked me out !!!!

911 is the emergency number you dial to get the police, fire, etc.
You (in Britain) would dial 999. (In Hell, I suppose, you'd dial 666.) |

It's OK guys.
I've just realised the answer to my own question.Of course '911' is the American emergency telephone number equivalent to the British '999'. I guess that along with the majority of right thinking people of the world my thoughts are focused on the approaching anniversary of September 11th.I suspect that I wouldn't have even noticed the line in the show previous to last year.
