Folding silks can be an art in itself. What storage tips do you have?
Here's one of mine. When folding silks don't fold along the same creases every time. This weakens the fabric at that point leading to early wearout. I got this from my wife who is working on her Ph.D. in the History of Costumes and does a lot of clothing preservation. She also says wrapping silks around a cardboard tube is not recommended because the acids in the cardboard will leach into the clouth over a period of time. Stephen |

I have silks that are over 20 years old. Most are Rice Silks of the best quality. The acid has not affected the silks at all. I have them in a plastic zip bag that can be purchased from most office supply stores. I fold them in the same folds. All are still in perfect condition. The ones I use I just throw into my case as they are ready to use. They do sell acid free paper that can be glued around the tube if it makes you worry less.

I store my silks (and I'm sure I have well over a thousand) in Sweater boxes from Sterilite (WalMart). No paper! These boxes stack and you can see into them without moving them. Of course they have labels too. (But who trust a label? Ever labeled something "Wet Paint"?)
Utility silks (12"-36" solid squares) are sometimes put into paper envelopes for special purposes but they only stay there a few weeks. Used, they are returned to the plastic boxes. I do segregate colors into plastic freezer bags. There will be several colors in a single sweater box. I have some silks that must go back to the 40s and 50s. Apparently silk worms do great work!
