Since now all my mentalism acts used to be without music at all, just my voice (mentalist's best weapon)
I recently start thinking about a more theatrical kind of mentalism , one that can combine script with music, so the mood, feelings and pictures would be stronger.Any ideas if that could realy work? Any sources on this? thanks in advance

I think a good comical note could be achieved if one was to have the theme music to Jeopardy!--well, that music that they play during the Final Jeopardy question--playing during a drawing duplication or some such.

Since I like to perform while I'm out with friends in bars, parties and stuff, I sometimes can't say much because of the loud music and perform sort of silent. It works for me!

Great background mood music is very helpful. Try listening to slow jazz, theme songs, or just get a musician to play and record eerie bass music. Kepp it low and talk over it

Andy Nyman has a strong and very funny routine accompanied by Kylie ( on CD - not in person obviously )
I also have a silly little routine where I'll talk about subliminal messages in music, mention I have a piece of music that should make everbody think of the same playing card. Then play Motorhead's Ace of Spades full blast.. Assuming they realise it's a joke and after the applause have finished and everybody's sat back down and wiped the tears of mirth from their eyes I'll ask a girl on the front row to name a card they're thinking off, making it clear not to go for the "obvious" one. I'll have a Queen of Hearts in my top pocket on the off chance and an ID taped to the bottom of her chair for anything else she may say.. God - I'm mad me... |

Hi titanasgr
I recommend you to read the book- Maximum Entertaiment-by Ken Weber. He explains very well Why mentalists should have music in their acts. Do you imagine a movie without soundtrack? Music it's the best thing that you can add to your show. Regards |

Great idea Paul.
Just what Mentalism need. Personal fresh approaches. And as it was mentioned already, it was just Andy Nymans routine that got me thinking of music in my act. His routine is wonderful. But it also works for him because he is a great stage persona. Mark is totally right. Music is essential! I use Music three times in my current standup act. To get someone on stage,at the end as a farwell and with one routine. And music does not have to be only in the background. If we use it actively, we can make our effects much stronger or funnier. I always use the song "Money, Money (..makes the world go round) -Liza Minelly - with my opener, which happen to be the classic bank night.
It plays really good. Regards |

Thanks everyone for the nice comments,
mentathought, I am familiar with nyman's effect, but this is not what I am talking about. The only reason I have my doubts, is because I am not sure that I can really sync it ,since mentalism is a very live and unpredicted baby (mentalism-unpredicted....LOL)/ Hope you understand because my English are BAD!

My stage act is synchronised to both music and projected images for the entire act.

Dear Ian,
I don't realy understand the way you control specators responses and replys to be on sync... I mean , I can imagine this on a magic show ...but with the scripting on mentalism that seems a bit difficult....unless you never ask anything while talking to the specs...plz help me!!!
