Hello Folks!
I just found a guy who has tons of Morgan Dollars that he wants to sell me. Of-course they aren't gimmicked and they have been circulated. I just thought I would ask y'all what they normally sell for, so that I know I am getting my monies worth. How much is a 1921 Soft Morgan worth? Thanks folks! By the way, I just noticed that mystre71 sells his for $25. Any other prices? |

Coin worth depends on a few things.
Condition; uncirculated is best. Silver Content; the price changes daily due to fluctuations in the market. Supply; if there are a lot of them, the relative value goes down. Most Morgan Dollars should sell between 6$ and $15 for a circulated coin. Buy them for any more than that and you are getting ripped. Where I live a good soft, "junk silver" Morgan dollar goes between $8 and $12 dollars. |

DVA's got it. The price of silver will determine the cost for most "commons" at a coin dealer. $8-$12 is about right these days. I just bought two 1921 Morgans about a week ago at a coin shop. I Payed $9 for one and $10 for the other. I wouldn't pay much more.

1921 is a common date and vandy's dead on along with dva. Depending how fine a coin you want you could go to a coin shop and ask to see any cull dollars. If you want really bright coins with excellent relief expect to pay more and in some cases a lot more.
Cull coins trade on spot price and even though silver is up a little along with gold right now, its nothing like the hayday in the early 80s when people were melting down their silverware. Last time I bought some the dealer let me look through the box of culls and I found a dozen that were in decent shape without too many nicks, etc. -=tabman

Where did I post about selling Morgans for 25.00? I may have, but I just don't rememeber this...lol
Thanks Joe Ok, just did a search and found what Willie is talking about. I posted something from Kirk G who can make YOUR dollars into soft coins and one of the prices in that post was for $25.00 for whatever type of process it takes him (Kirk G, not me) to make them soft. Hope this clears up in confusion. If you're looking for soft coins you should contact Kirk G. Best, Joe

The going rate on Ebay is around 10-12 dollars for 1921 Morgans in good shape.

10 dollars is fair, especially if you don't have to pay shipping.

I bought 20 on ebay recently for @ $65. The guy had lots of them. I didn't care about condition or date, if fact, the softer the better.

I collect coins as well as I do tricks with them, and $25.00 is definitely too much for a 1921 soft Morgan. You can get one in near uncirculated condition for that price, even though you wouldn't, of course, want one in such good shape for magic. However, since most people/dealers sell them on the basis of numismatic value, that is always a good standard for evaluating a buying price. Just compare a few coin shop prices and/or check a coin pricing guide anytime you wonder about the actual value of any coin.
I should make one ammendment, which is likely to be blazingly obvious to most people. I only want to ammend it, so nobody will think I don't know the obvious myself. Hahahahha! Anyway, the obvious, ironic thing about coins used for magic and coins generally considered valuable in a coin shop is this: The soft coins that magicians want for nice, silent routines are the very coins that coin shops sell for next to nothing. Aren't we lucky! This may read like something from the Department of Redundancy Department, but sometimes I just like to hear myself talk and, likewise, see myself write.

I find that Silver Eagles make a beautiful presentation. I use them in my "Coins Across" routine. Uncirculated run as low as $7 each.

No, Larry, I meant @$65. What I didn't mean was "Morgans". My eyes saw Morgans...my brain saw "old coins"...and my fingers typed away. What I actually got were Walking Liberties. My mistake. sorry to mislead.

The reason Kirk was charging $25 for the coins is that they have been artificially softened, and feel perfect. It is a lot of work. So he buy's the coins and softens them after the fact.

When you start out with coins that are not soft, they cost more. Then you have to add the cost of the labor to soften them, so that makes the price of $25.00 far more acceptable. Also, it gives some control over the end result. You can have this if you have all afternoon to go from one coin dealer to another. The last couple of times I went by MFCD, I had just missed out on his $7.00 culls. Some guy had purchased every one he had. Probably wanted them for jewelry work.

Just to add a data point on this, today I bought some Morgans at Coins Plus in Spokane, WA for $8 apiece. Price was $7 to $10 depending on how many I bought.

There is a local shop in the Portland area selling Morgans in a basket for 6.50 a piece. And I'm not telling where!

You can find great bargins at coin shows. Also, tons of very unique coins. Most sell at wholesale. I’ve found soft Morgans for as low a $8-$10, and soft Walking Libertys for about $6.
For those in the Los Angeles area, there is a show in Long Beach, February 24-26 at the convention center. |
