I saw this trick performed where the magician guesses the location of a coin or other object in one of the spectator's two hands...Is it still on the market?

Hello,
I think this is the version by Jerry Somerdin of the Eye to Eye effect by Charles Gauci. Through an arrangement, Devilish Deception is no longer on the market. That's what I have heard. The Gauci effect is though... Martin |

Right now Charles Gauci is in the middle of a horrific battle over rip-offs of his effect.
Personally, I don't get it. It's a choice of one out of two! One out of two thousand might be something to get excited about. But one out of two? Hey, you could GUESS and be right about half the time! |

Let me see if I get this right...
A coin is placed into one of two hands and the magic dude guess which? I know I saw that in a boy scout handbook about 30 years ago... I know there are at least two or three subtle "natural" ways to pull this off (and know of non-magicians that do it as a bar bet)... WHERE'S THE INTRIGUE AND WHY WOULD IT BE SUCH A BIG DEAL?

Darmoe,
The magician did it with five people, (ten hands) and was able to guess successfuly. Then one of us put it in our pocket, and he knew it wasn't in any of the ten hands...He was out of the room when we hid the coin. |

G-D,
One out of ten? Did any of the five people adopt exactly the same pose as the coin holder? This is not magic. It is a puzzle, and not a very good one because it has so many possible solutions (i.e., methods). Sid

Outside of utilizing a gimmick, there are really no ways to do this in a clean fashion and be 100% accurate. And, believe me, guessing which hand an object is in many times in a row is an amazing trick. Arguably the greatest card trick of all time, Out of This World, is simply a 50/50 chance repeated over and over. How many people say, "oh, I just had a 50/50 chance and happen to right each time. No big deal." Um, none.

I picked up one of the Eye to Eye effects by Gauci. The gimmick does not seem that well made...the "thing" obviously makes noise when shaken in the hand...hmmm.

Your "thing" must be broken, it should not shake. I bought this item, but I was disappointed for a different reason.
I have made up my own method/version of this, much more believable, and less ridiculous. E-Leoni. |

The impact of Eye to Eye comes from the repetition. It very shortly becomes apparent to the audience that you aren't just guessing, and there is nothing they can do to "fake you out." It really is a marvelous trick.

Here’s a thought on “Eye to Eye” (though not bizarre): Conceal the gimmick in your mouth under the natural gum line, then have the female volunteer line up holding her clenched fists in front of herself . By "kissing" the back of each hand, you will be able to determine which hand holds the item.
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

What a wonderful idea!!!
Congratulation markthorold! It's strange but funny, and moreover very practical. And it gives you a good reason to kiss a woman's hand! See you soon,

Concerning Peter's comment on the whole 50/50 part of this effect, Derren Brown does a number of effects where the odds are 50/50 but they are greatly entertaining because DB puts money on getting the answer right. He is also able to get the spectator to think that they might just win and you can see the contortions they go through as he makes them doubt their initial choices.
Just my thoughts... A |

A 50-50 prediction can be done so well it is a feature of an act.
In the same way, a one-in-10,000 prediction can be done so badly it is an embarrassment. Trouble is, most performers fall in the latter group! |

Does anyone know where I can get hold of this? A "Devilish Deception” by Jerry Somerdin.

The "thing" makes no noise at all. I purchased mine from him at the IBM convention last year. He had a booth next to mine, and performed Eye to Eye many times with so many variations that you wouldn't suspect the method. He has a second effect called "Body Language" that is based on an extension of the same principle, but done with a different gaff. It is based on Karotsuke by Max Maven. To repeat what Martin Carli said earlier, the Jerry Somerdin effect is no longer available.

LOL-Bill, the maestro of words and spelling has spelled something incorrectly! The Maven effect is actually entitled "Kurotsuke", and is taken from the Japanese language.

Mark Strivings in "WAM-Walk Around Mentalism" includes a "which hand is it in" effect in which the SPECTATOR guesses in which hand the magician/mentalist holds the coin (and succeeds or fails as the performer sees fit).
