Why not go for all of them? I have! and I love watching every one. I like to see the rhythm of the different magicians' throws and hypes. for me, that's the real value of them all. you can learn the hype and comeons in any old book......scarnes is the best in my opinion. the only reason to buy a video or dvd on the monte is to watch the hype in action. and also the s4s shows a great reinactment of the hustle as it is on the streets!! I laugh everytime I see whit standing there after everybody runs off with his 500 bucks!! and how can daryl "steal" anything on the 3 card monte? its so ancient!!! I don't think anyone has rights to the actual hustle...only the gimmicked variations probably. I have s4s dvd and daryls...along with sal's and many others who include it on their videos (doc eason, simon lovell, etc) and daryls and s4s are definitely my two favorites. I live here in new orleans on canal street just outside the french quarter and I have yet to see a monte game actually being played...though I have seen the shell game done with bottle caps a few times on canal street. I spent 7 years in prison where I honed in my monte skills. that's the only place ive ever seen it done for money......usually by me!!!

I have daryl's and sal's dvd on 3 card monte and in my opinion each is different. daryl's more for magic demonstrations while sal is more on street games (gambling).
to choose which you have to first know if you intend to show it as a gambling demo or as a magic presentation. after reading the posts by whithaydn, I think I would most prob order School for Scoundrels book on 3 card monte or the dvd cos I am interested in the history, and psychology of the street con man as the dvds I have are mainly jus sleights and does not go into depth on the game. cheerios
Think outside the box, cos people are all thinking inside now!! - ClouDsss

I like the School for Scoundrels DVD on the Monte. It even comes with THE book on the subject.

I prefer the street style of 3 card monte over the gimmicked packet tricks. I just like the feel of throwing the cards plus I'm clean at the end so even if someone grabs the cards, there's nothing to see.
For a long time, I could never get the hype move to work for me as the card that would be thrown seemed to stick in my fingers. I could never get it to consistently work. Then by chance, I found the perfect solution. In Darwin Ortiz's book, At The Table, he gave a detailed explanation how to avoid the very problem I had. It's in his monte routine (of course). It was easy to do and within an hour or so, I was hyping with incredible consistency. The funny thing is that I've never seen or heard anyone address this issue. Not on Daryl's dvd, Sal Piacente's or even in the School for Scoundrels book -- which I believe is the best source available. So if you have a problem with the hype move, check out Darwin Ortiz's At The Table. You will be pleasantly surprised. |

I would always advise people to check out anything by Darwin Ortiz. He is both an excellent performer and teacher, and one of the more knowledgeable people in the business.
