This title is inspired from Mr. Osterlind's wonderful DVD set.
What do you feel are the real secrets? Here's a small one of my own, or big to me. Some time ago I bought an outrageouly expensive secret, even though I had of course been of the opinion that there are no amazing secrets my interst got the better of me, the secret was billed as being the most amazing way to gather information ever. The Lesson I learned from this purchase was more valuable then the secret its self. When I recieved the secret along with some wonderful additions it made me realize that every secret is very ordinary in the bare light of day, in my sincere opinion, the Osterlind perfected center tear was worth just as much and this secret that cost more then ten times as much. The person who sells this effect must be aware that they are selling this realization also as the beauty of the secret cannot be disputed but the price tag could if it were more widely purchased. My lesson was that, there are truely no amazing secrets, simply amazing performers which we all have the chance to become if we put in the time. What Amazing secrets have you learned along these lines. H.W

I created and performed a piece of mentalism which I designed to throw mentalists as it was aparently taking place under scientific conditions. I then went to perform it in my show, expecting the audience to go crazy and they sat there looking at me, later they freaked out to PK Touches (like they do).
Proved to me that I should remember I am performing for laymen and not mentalists and it really does not matter what a fellow mentalist thought of your show. Okay so its nice to get criticism and praise but as long as your show is audience centred then you are doign your job, only in my opinion that is. If the laymen are hiring me then it is them I shall entertain, after all they are paying my wages. K

I think real secrets are ones that help us the most. someone once said "the road is never long to a friends house." in many ways, no matter how expensive, cheap, selfworking or finger flicking hard an effect or secret is, how we, as individuals percieve it is what takes the secret and makes it real.
a fine example of mine goes like this: I've got a few years under the belt in the art of magic and mentalism and in no way am I great, or really that good for that matter. but what strikes me most is the joy of performing. the secret that really must have influenced that most was a simple 3 coins across plot that involved hiding coins behind your fingers. while this is so entirely obvious, my love for magic wouldnt have grown to the effect that it is at now unless I practiced this effect. I practiced this so much that my hands looked no different when a coin was and was not behind my fingers. the little tidbit of information that told me I would fool everyone with this after a long amount of practice was gold for me. |

Age has taught me to step into and out of the limelight. You cannot nor should not be the center of attention everywhere you go.
I once went to a party wherein a lady, wishing to avoid the social interaction OF a party pulled out her Tarot Deck and read all night long. Naturally she was a star, and also avoided conversation not of her choosing, normal interactions, etc. I watched her hide behind the Tarot the entire evening. I did not discuss Tarot with her, but watched as she did that hidey thing all night long. I reflected that many times in the past, in many phases of my life, I have done the same thing using magic, Tarot, Hypnosis, etc etc etc. Take the focus to avoid true interaction. The limelight is a warm and wonderful spot to be in, but not for long. The ego gets brittle, and the conversation a repetitive bore (having heard/said it all numerous times before). New audiences only become fresh meat for the Ego. Side stage and back stage and even in the audience's seat can become far more interesting places once you have become bored with yourself and any limelight you may strut. Now, I can sit quietly and enjoy others' entertainments, comfortable in NOT being the center of attention. That was an easy lesson to learn, but sure took a long time.

I percieve this question a bit different to those who have posted here already. I believe the real secret is how children can have the intelligence to figure out tricks that adults cannot and yet adults think they are the clever ones.

I learned from the Eddie Izzard school of presentations - it's not particularly what you say but how you say it... Presentation, presentation, presentation

H.W.,
I think that the greatest secret that I have learned is that magic is universal, but eyes to see it are not. Peace, Parson
