After me dropping many hints, my wife has agreed that she'll try and get me a copy of this for our 10th Wedding Anniversary ,
However...can anyone let me know the precise contents of the book? I know that it is something that I'd love in my library, but I already have a number of other teaching sources (1 and 2 of the new Jensen books included). Perhaps if anyone has a copy could they post a review, or at least the contents list? Thanks - Bruce (This is a repost of a message that I also placed on MagicBunny.co.uk) |

The table of contents of this book is five pages. Much of it is information about performers. But he has just about every vanish and reproduction you can imagine in it.

Thanks Bill. Does it also have routines, and in your opinion, is it worth the money you have to pay for it,as a reference resource?

The funny thing re Frank Garcias Encyclopedia is, that you don't need all this stuff..
It is great to get all this info, it is great to be informed, but basically one does solely need one or 2 'good' sleights re vanishes, as well as a singel or 2 good routine using sponges. The advantage is, that one 'might' have a chance to choose what suits one best, and that I suppose is, what the book is all about.. Why I do know this? Well, I've had it -and still have it ever since it was published- and I do the sponges..2 diff. routines..and none out of this book. This doesn't mean the book isn't worth to own, I wouldn't sell my copy for any of the overprized offers on Ebay and other places, but I really think one can do spongeball-magic without owning that book.. I've seen quite a couple of good performers doing very personalized spongeball-routines of their own, none of them to be found in Frank Garcias book... What about Ken Brookes spongeball routine? What about Albert Goshmans? What about Patrik Pages? What about Roy Bensons approach? All the above mentioned are great and outstanding routines that still get well responces from any audience. Even Fred Kaps had a version as had Dai Vernon, actually he showed me his routine way back in 1964. I have to have a renewed look to se if any of these routines are explained there My advice still is to read and get the book, it is a good one, I simply can't understand so many ppl are raving about it and are willing to pay these outstanding prices asked.. It still is *your* own work that makes a successfull performance and reading that book simply might overload ones mind, takes real judgment to choose therefrom..
Learn a few things well.....this life is not long enough to do everything.....
( Words of wisdom from Albert Goshman ...it paid off for him - it might as well for YOU!!!- My own magic is styled after that motto... ) |

To answer your initial question, Frank Garcia has split the book into essentially 5 parts; > The first examines the best places to hide sponge balls(ie.pages 14 to 28); > The second explains over 20 vanishes(ie.pages 29 to 89); > The third contains various routines(ie.pages 90 to 189); > The fourth contains ideas, thoughts and reflections(ie.pages 190 to 220); > The fifth contains an epilogue and a couple of never fail sponge cake recipes!! However, I would have to agree with Werner G. Seitz - lots of reference information, but not a book I rely on totally for developing my own routines. Hope this helps. |

Many thanks to evryone for the help and advise.
I never look upon any book as a source of reliance, just a source of further understanding and ideas. I have spongeball books/DVD's including routines and thoughts from Goshman, Pat Page (inc. Benson Bowl), Jensen, Audley Walsh, Ireland etc. All these help influence me, my thoughts, and the way that I approach this fascinating and fun area of magic - and I just love reading anything magical anyway.
