I have a small collection of coffee cannisters from Trader Joes in large and small sizes. I've been saving them because I figured they could be used to make a good magic trick. The question now is, what to do with them? I figure I could use one for a Square Circle, but I'd love to get some other ideas. Sources for the effects would be appreciated also. I have Mark Wilson, Tarbells, Amateur Magician's Handbook, and a few other sources. I don't want to go searching for some obscure and/or expensive reference.
Thanks in advance for help and suggestions. |

Sean,
There's an effect I beleive it's called the "Treasures of Leong Fu". Also known as the Organ Pipes I believe...which involves and transfering of the load. If you'd like more info please PM me. Magically yours, Matt Kielbiski |

How about a "Nest of Boxes" effect? David Ginn had a really nice version of this on one of his tapes (and no doubt in one of his books) that used ungimmicked nesting cannisters.

Hiya, Sean:
I didn't know TJ's was up north...when I was in the Monterey area a while back, Nob Hill was the yuppie grocery store! Anyway, the import Ghost Tube is around the size of a coffee cannister -- how about swiping the label off one of the genuine cans, and sticking it to the Ghost Tube, working it into the Organ Pipe routine as mentioned [it's in Tarbell]? Or, with some tin snips and a bit of epoxy or silicone, why not turn the cannister into a Foo Can? Add a TT sugar vanish, a Milk Pitcher...say, I've got a little tinkering of my own to do, come to think of it! Leland |

I use number 10 cans and make them black (paint or velvet) to use in square circle or other appear/disappear effects

Thanks for the suggestions. Right now, I'm making a square circle with one of the cannisters as the circle. The square will be stained wood. If I can manage all that without cutting off a finger, I'm moving on to some suggestions here and the production box in Mark Wilson's book.

I found two coffee cans (one regular, one decaf) at Kroger that actually nest perfectly!

(the MAK Foo Can was the exact size of a small can of Folger's Coffee ... for all I know , MAK made theirs out of a repurposed Folgers Coffee can!). The MAK can originally was painted red with a goofy looking white rabbit design spray painted on the front. If you run across one of those for sale cheap on eBay , grab it and then you can redecorate it as a coffee can. (see below) I'm sure the usage of the coffee foo can for a vanishing and reappearing coffee routine is obvious. I haven't used mine for some time , but now that the style of coffee cans has changed from the old metal cans to plastic canisters, I'm going to get one of the new style canisters and gimmick it as a foo can (if I'm lucky the newer style plastic can will be the right diameter to simply cut the bottom out of the plastic coffee container and slide it down over the metal can that is already gimmicked ... no one ever sees the inside of the can anyway, so that will work fine , as long as the plastic container will fit tight around the metal can.) MAK Magic Foo Can with coffee label: New style Folger's coffee can (plastic) - Although I notice that Maxwell House still sells an old style round metal can, so maybe I just need to switch the label on mine to Maxwell House. . |

If you do not need the coffee to reappear , but only to "disappear" from the coffee can a simple solution is to wedge a section of super-absorbent sponge into the bottom of the coffee can. (easier clean-up than using sodium polyacrylate SAP) . Pour coffee into the can , then tip the can over and no coffee comes out , it has vanished.

Use one for Don Alan's Comedy Egg Trick, another for Miser's Dream and yet another to switch separate links for a linked chain and finally, use a pair, one slightly smaller than the other, for Grant's Chink Cans. ('Sorry for that last politically charged title.)
