Hey all;
Ok I'm not sure if this was the right place to post this, but here we go. I am looking into purchasing a copy of Steinmyer's Modert Art and building my own so that it will be large enough for me. I was wondering if his plans allow the prop to fold flat. And if not, would that be an easy modification to make? (Ie piano hinges on the boxes. Thanks. Magically yours, Matt |

No the plans do not make it folding flat. Personally, it would be more trouble than it is worth. I know from working with Blackstone's Zig Zag years ago, it took almost 6 times the time to put it together over solid box models.
On the Modern Art, you might be able to make some pieces detach and nest for packing but I won't try to make it pack flat.

Richard;
Thanks for your reply. I was thinking of hinging it so that it woud accordian fold in a way. But you are right, I have a zig zag that is a pack flat model and it does take more time for me to set up than if it were solid. My main concern is storage. Since I do not have a lot of storage it would help save space if it folded down somewhat. Matt |

I've built a Modern Art, and would not suggest trying to buid it to fold flat.
It's unsymmetrical shape makes it very impractical to do this. The main bottom box and the table should be built as one piece to keep it's structural strength. My top box comes off and breaks down. Which allows it to get packed alongside the bottom of the prop. That's as small as it gets. Hope this helps? Michael Berends

If you do build it from the Steinmeyer book be sure to check all your math carefully; there are a number of incorrect dimensions in the "blueprints".
When I built my first one I entered all the data into a high-end CAD program and it caught every error before I cut a single piece of wood. BTW, the other major illusion in that Steinmeyer book ("Shadow Theatre") suffers from similar errors. Regards, Thomas Wayne

Right you are wayne. I second that but it was not too difficult for me and my partner to figure the corrections and we had a nice piece built.

Hey guys,
I will be building this with an experienced carpenter, and will have it modified to take my 5'11 160lb frame. Do you think this will prove a great amount of difficulty for us? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for all your help thus far! Magically yours, Matt |

I have built two Modern Arts, Use the plans ONLY as a Guide and make a mock up out of cardboard first and then make another mock up out of cheap ply. Then build your Modern Art. Like Thomas said some of the dimensions are incorrect. But please make your Modern Art and the table it sits on small, keep cutting it down and down!!!!

Thomas,
is it possible to get the 'errors' you found, then I can make corrections in my copy of the book. Perhaps Jim would allow all book owners to have them. Rick |

I'm reposting this in hopes to find the correct dimensions. I'm mearly a month or two away from building this and am not satisfied with my cardboard mock-up... I figure if I built one with the right directions, I will have a little more to go off of...

My Modern Art can break down into panels, it is not easy if you are not expert, you have to ak carpenter to make it.

Bryan, since many of these illusions are custom built to fit the assistant, one person's measurements may not work for someone else. Tweak the measurements and try again till you're satisfied. That's why Osborne recommends cardboard; it's cheaper and easier to work with than wood.
