When I was going through some of the old topics I came across this one http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=72468&forum=17, the idea of a magic game show is very appealing to me, and I was wondering if any of you guys could help me get mine started. If there are any tricks that you would recommend that can be performed in a game show type way, any books or videos that you can recommend, and any advice you could give, I would really appreciate it.

First I would like to ask who your intended market is for this game show? Tell us more about the audience you are targeting for the game show approach. This will help us all to get a better idea for what effects might be the most appropriate. Also, tell us a bit about your style of performance and the character that you most often play. Your style is unique to yourself and the game show you present must match this style or character. Kyle

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the age groups. Like Jeff this is intended to be performed before the older kids, 10 to 100. When performing the Game Show, I'll be acting like your regular Game Show host. As far as my performance style is concerned I'm mostly very silly and sometimes kind of corny. For example when doing tricks like Professor Cheer's Rope Trick, I'm very good at making the faces and noises that really make this trick good. Then when I do more serious tricks like Mental Epic or something, I really try to act like a serious magician even though the kids know I'm not.

Well 10 - 100 is a huge audience age difference and still does not accurately describe the intended market for this show. You will really want to well-define the exact market this show is geared towards as that will make a huge difference in how you set the show up and how you promote it.
If it is geared towards children 10 and older, then the show can go one way. If it is for adults or seniors in senior or retirement homes, then there are other things to take into consideration. Really define the intended market for this show and you will be much better off and headed down the proper road to success. Another question for you is what is the intended venue? Birthday parties at a house? Colleges? Kyle

You are absolutely right! I can't believe I didn't see that earlier. With that said I think I'll make this a family show instead. I want to try and make this for kids ages four to ten-ish. I know it will be difficult, but I really want this to be something kids of all ages (at kids from 4-10) can enjoy and their parents as well. This type of show would have to be good for parties, not birthday parties, however, just regular parties; maybe I could even set up two shows, one for the family and one for teenagers or college students.

My personal feeling is that this would be a hard sell for just family parties. You could do it as a birthday party type of a thing, but you would really have to structure it well so that it is fun and gets everyone involved especially the birthday child.
Something like this might go over much better as a college kids or high school level. It would be different and fun and could be easier to do. Just my two cents worth. Kyle

It may very well be hard to sell for just family parties, but it's a challenge I'm willing to accept. If it doesn't work out, I'll adjust it to fit a more mature audience and see what happens then.

I wish you much luck with it. It could be a lot of fun. Do you have any ideas for it yet? How long of a show? What formats will you use?

Thanks, Kyle. I already have a couple ideas in mind. For example if it's age appropriate I'll perform Mental Epic like "The Price Is Right". I'll present different items which they can win if they guess the prices correctly. Also one that I'm working on now is having a brief intermission in the middle of the show. I'm thinking the show will be about 45 minutes. I'm not sure what you mean about 'what formats I will be using', however.

I guess what I meant was how do you plan on structuring the show, so that it is interactive and fun for the audience? Would the show be a show and then new contestants come up for each trick? Each trick would be themed around a game show style theme?

I think it could be a neat way of themeing a show. I am just wondering what ideas he has set up or thought up for it. I think it could go over very well if done right.

Hi Mac, there is a couple of effects by Ton Onosaka which can be pretty good for games magic.
I got Cola Monte from the creator and it works pretty well for me to transit from games to magic show. Search for "Onosaka" in http://www.Hocus-pocus.com and you should find them there. |

Before the show starts I'll explain the "rules", you know the regular kids show rules like stay in your seat etc... Each trick will be presented as a game which you can win a prize in but even if you don't win you still get a prize for trying. I'm thinking about having each member of the audience where a name tage and I'll choose volunteers by pulling names randomly out of a bowl, sorta like what happens in The Price Is Right. I have a couple of ideas for some effects to do and I'll post them up once I finish my list. Mac |

It sounds like it is coming together for you much better. I like your thoughts. I would keep all of this written down and simply brain storm ideas. Think of what effects you can get involvment with and still keep the fun and the show at a steady pace.

Hi all,
it has been a while since I posted anything, my apologies for that. re. games, there are a few effects which come to mind. I use 'Miracle padlock' for older kids, if the kids find the key which opens the padlock they win a prize (of course they never do) If they are willing to take part but fail to select the winning key, they must complete a forfeit. This can include wearing funny hats or wigs and performing a routine or musical game such as Cha Cha slide etc. Of course any 'bank nite type routine would suffice. Another routine which I have presented as a game at family shows or older kids in 'Nosey spectators' which I believe is available from 'Alakazam magic' The classis 'Spelling Test' routine is also a great 'bit' Yes/no game is a truly great piece to carry. I suppose with a little thought many 'effects' can be presented as games. I would love to hear what other people do in this situation. David Lees. |

Does the whole audience get to play every game or is it going to be some playing, some watching?
