Hi there Nick, While I agree that Jeffs work is good many magicians new to the craft rely to much on video. I know for some that learning from a book is difficult but it gives the information needed without any influence from seeing it done. I also think that the David Roth book is also great tool and his videos will help after you have learned from the book. Brian

Carl Cloutier also has a short Miser's Dream routine in his sleeving video. IMO it is better than the Mc Bride version. Mc Bride does it silent act. Cloutier's is more practical. He also ends up producing a box of condoms from the volunteer's jacket as finale.

If you want somthing quick and dirty. Try McBride's Manipulation Without Tears DVD, if your into video and not book. Also, McBride's World Class manipulation series. The first is more for beginners, but some good material. The second gives more than you could want.

Bruce Elliots Classic Secrets of Magic has a killer misers dream that starts with the production of a full glass of wine. The whole book is full of excellent magic.

I am confused about Bobo's coin magic book: some say Modern coin magic; others say new modern coin magic. Which is correct?

Nick:
These are great resources to study and learn from as long as you do not fall into the bad habit of mimicing the moves and becoming too much of a clone of the magician you are watching. Use them as tools only and they will serve you well. =) Kyle

I agree with Kyle. Most of the times many young magicians who grew up watching video tapes, vcds and dvds of instructional magic take on the persona of the person instructing. I'd suggest that we balance our magic knowledge by also reading books and learning from them rather than having a mentality that "we will learn faster if we watch a video of it".

Isn't it better to learn thoroughly as opposed to quickly?

Books are the best learning instrument.
They promote creativity unlike videos and dvds. Young people always want to get things the fast easy way. Kyle is right on.

WE seem to pass on the same answers to the same questions over and over just like we are on automatic pilot. Misers Dream is probably going to look real similiar no matter how you learn it.It really doesn't matter how you learn it, just learn it. Just like someone always ask about a "realistic" thumbtip and everyone automatically starts telling them how it doesn't matter what it looks like and then someone else tells the story about the Chrome Thumbtip . You can just look at the heading, and predict the answers----people have different ways of learning---its no big deal--you are probably not going to get rich performing the zillionth version of the Miser's Dream anyway----IMHO YMMV ---cheers!---JIMO

By "reading and understanding" the material and the concept, one is able to better develope a 'Miser's Dream' routine that is unique to that individual. The down side to DVD's is we as people and Magicians are 'Lazy', it is easier to Ape the DVD instead of working on moves that fit you! If you must "Do the DVD's" do them last, instead of first! You'll be happier with the results in the long run!

You must look for Al Flosso doing The Miser;s Dream. It's on video and is THE classic. For simple, clear cut instructions and good gags get hold of the UK's Pat Pages Book, callled ' The Miser's Dream' ) of course!)He published it himself but I'm sure Davenport's of London at £8 (approx $4 to $5. Pat is famous for his Dream and years of experience are distilled in the book so easily.
