My votes - Bertini, Ogawa, Latta - mostly for most mystical magical moments, each magican I have seen has some fine chops but these guys made me feel astonishment most strongly.
Ok, I can't help myself on these kinds of threads sometimes. I tabulated the answers of the top THREE mentioned in each post. Roth - 24 Slydini - 11 Dill - 11 Silver - 9 Goshman - 9 Ogawa - 8 Goshman, David Stone, Harbottle, Kam, Kenner, Lucero, Thomas - 5 Fitch, Gallo, Gertner, Kurtz, McClintock, Rubinstein, Schneider - 4 Assuming the list was in order in each post (some said it was not) the first second and third spots are: 1 - Roth 2 - Roth/Goshman - tied 3 - Slydini, Silver, Roth, Gertner, Dill, Bobo - tied

I've seen a lot of the coin guys and the best that I've seen live (and the actual performances).
Steve Cohen - Tannen's Magic Camp 1988 (I don't think people realize how awesome this guy is!) Eric DeCamps - Many times from 1988 - 1994 NYC (he should really be more well known in the magic community) Mike Gallo - Forks Hotel, Buffalo, NY 1990 (absolutely INCREDIBLE!)

Hey Nordatrax, what makes a magician a top guy or even the best, to you? Just wondering about that in view of the choices here. At these levels, I'm sure all these guys can show well. But I would guess that presentation, creativity, venue, etc., are important parameters. I've seen guys like David Stone, Shoot Ogawa, and Kurtz just do stuff that's unreal. I've also seen that from Mickey Silver in what he does. I have great respect for all these guys as they are technically made of great precision in their work, and they have made us all better in one way or another. David Roth is truly a fine magician, teacher, historian. Many branches on his particular tree. -Mb

David Roth, because he is the master of coin magic.
David Stone, because of his style. Mickey Silver, because everything he does looks like real magic. |

I'd say Mano, Eric Jones and my mentor Mr. Ramon "Rael" Ello. Unfortunately or fortunately for me....much of the world has not seen his great coin work. I have never seen anyone baffle and entertain laymen and magicians with just one coin.
Best from Manila, Rannie

Hey, I wonder if of this list of supposedly who's the best, if these guys actually have different lists about who's the best. For instance, who might David Roth think are the 3 Best he's seen. That would mean that more than 95% of the list would be eliminated by the guy that tops the list. Of course, you like who you like and that goes for any of us, but it is interesting.

Really?
Was that that difficult to understand? OK then, again and hopefully more simply: -I wonder do the magi's held here in such high esteem have their own "Best 3." -I wonder what the #1 guy, Roth's "Best 3" are? -Why? Well because, as the top guy, his insight on what's good-better-best might be completely different for perhaps some real advanced reasons. -And if he did pick 3, it would most certainly not contain most of who made the lists here. -And again, no disrespect is meant to any choosers or any of the chosen.

My guess is that some of the best work stays hidden..Not that I am anywhere near the top, but other folks including myself don't get out of the work arena often.
Also some of the best venues for coin...work I have seen outside the magic circles included places like flea markets..(not by a magician working but a vendor) and maximum security prisons.(I was a therapist not an inmate...my chess game moved up a few notches..but I digress) Also those who have not read much sometimes come up with interesting stuff because they don't know what is and is not possible. This is me speculating, but I'm pretty sure, from his previous work and videos, that one of David Roth's picks would be Slydini. He utilizes a lot of Slydini's principles (one-coin routine, Slydini rest position, etc.) in his work.

Possibly Dai Vernon might be another one, as I have also heard Roth speak admirably/fondly of him many times. That would leave only one spot open for a third and final pick, and somehow I don't think it would be anyone on that larger list. Roth is quite the historian himself, and I would think would look at older proven greats before ever naming any such contemporary, with all due respect of course.
