Hi,
I saw nickels to dimes in a magnet so that you could spread the coins out a bit. I have long forgotten. Does any one know where I could buy them from? |

Where have you seen this magnet 'version'?

Why would you need (or want) to spread the nickles out? Audiences of real people don't look at a stack of nickles and ask you to "prove" they aren't a hollow tube.

As I don't know about you but when I stack coins out they don't look all perfect with no markings on the side.

Elliot. Why should that matter? You wouldn't invite them to examine the stack...

I do other tricks with money and then I switch it for these. most of the time its ok, but somtimes people notice that the coins even from a distance are fake.
A little spread showing 5 put them down and then do it is better. Also the detail on the side is better then just a block with a few lines. |

You may be confusing the “stack” of coins in Nickels to Dimes with a Stack of coins used in many other trick. A stack of coins can be built with “loose” rivets or magnetic, but this has nothing to do with the stack of nickels in Nickels to Dimes. ALSO: If you are having people tell you that something is wrong with the little stack of Nickels in your presentation, you are doing something wrong in your presentation. I used to this trick hundreds of times each weekend at a magic shop and was never burned. Keeping in mind that people look for “flaws” when they see trick done over a magic shop counter. You may be leaving to long a pause before you cover the stack. In other words, examination of that little stack of nickels in not a part of this trick. Bob |

My presentation as far as I know is ok if not I would be happy to except criticism.
I may be getting the stacks of different tricks mixed up. There is two reason I wanted it on magnets is: 1. I feel that having the stack look a little more real is a bonus, a security, and also gives a nice feel in the hand. I suppose I could get better quality ones. (If you know where I could get better quality ones, and also different size coins, pref in English currency) 2. I like using this trick as a follow on from a '3 fly' kind of routine, where the coins are spread it would be nice to switch for the 'stack' in the same spread position, close them up and change them. Thanks for all Wellington. |

Regarding your Nickels to Dimes presentation. Do you take off a “dummy” coin at the beginning of the routine? Bob |

From when? I don't understand.

You have the little stack. On top of the stack shell is an attached Nickel. On top of that, you should have a loose Nickel. You hold the stack with one hand to "stabilize" the stack as you remove the loose Nickel, saying that you may have too many nickels. As you put that loose nickel down you immediately cover the stack with the "cover" as you go into the routine. Oddly enough, drawing attention to the stack by removing the "extra" coin, does take attention away from the stack. You should not be giving people any time to think about how real the nickels are, it is a non-issue. This is a lot of time to give to a small trick. But, Nickels to Dimes utilizes some basic principles in magic that are great fun. As old (and tired) as this trick is, it is a good bit of magic. Children can have their noses an inch away from the routine and still be mesmerized. Bob |

No, I don't have that. I have the 'stack' and a nickel on top and that's it.
The stack will rattle a lot and wont come back out (you don't want to know how long it took to get the 'stack' out) if I don't have the nickel on top of the stack. I think the one I have is very basic and not such good quality. It is an old trick but I have found that when I have vanished coins in the past I wont something that will finally make people realise that the coins have vanished and wont come back again. People may suspected that the coins you have vanished are somewhere hidden on you to use for the next part. With this I put the cover on really slowly and ask them to press it down then open the cover. |

Sounds like you may need a better set. However, I would like a magnetic set too just to see what could be done.

I have just sent you a PM. Do you realize how inexpensive this trick is? If you cover the stack (without the GLUED ON nickel, it ewill not come out easily because it has no weight. Do you have a Bang Ring? Before you start you should have: The Stack A Bang Ring A Glued On Nickle An Extra Nickel This is getting excruciating, but I will forge on. Bob |

I have: The Stack A Bang Ring An Extra Nickel. |

Hi guys!
Just thought I'd jump in here and mention a variation of this called the Perfect Pocket Trick by John Cornelius. It's pretty much a Nickles To Dimes routine, but using one of those little rubber, squeeze-open coin purses. The nickle gaff is superior, and I use the patter that this is a pocket version of Metamorphosis! I've thrown away my Royal Nickles To Dimes set, as they are VERY cheesy. I can only agree with the above post that the gaff fools nobody! I don't know where they are made today, but quality in that set has gone downhill. Barely engraved on the sides, just a glance I can see it. Compare the gaff in PPP and Royal's new Nickles To Dimes, and you'll see what I mean. I wonder if Jamie Schoolcraft or Todd Lassen would be willing to undertake the tooling to bring this classic back to quality? Just a thought... Doug |

I agree with you that the gaff is not made well by Royal or by any of the other three makers. However, to say that it “fools nobody” seems odd and excessive. If you do the trick (for non-magicians) the trick fools everyone I have ever done it for. I do this (with the Royal) dozens of times a day when I am in the magic shop. It is not a trick made for close inspection at any time during the routine. Are you telling people to look closely at the little stack of nickels? It would be like holding an Invisible Deck edgewise when performing the trick. When I use the ID, I tilt them down as if I am helping the spectator see the deck is normal. After all, it would not be hard to use the ID in a way to “get caught.” Dougini, Are you using an extra nickel when you do Niclels to Dimes? Bob |

Actually, I should have said that it cannot stand a lot of scrutiny, as yes, I've used the extra nickle, but I've had to use a convincer, i.e., real nickles, switch out, then do the "deed". In the past, I've been busted by people who have gotten a little more than a glance at the Nickles To Dimes gaff. Don't get me wrong, it DOES work, but I've recently been put off by the quality, especially after seeing the Perfect Pocket Trick's gaff. With the PPP, you can set the nickles ON THE SPEC'S HAND, and wave the purse, BAM! Instant change to dimes, and the nickles are found INSIDE. I guess I'm spoiled. Johnson Products, Jamie Schoolcraft and Todd Lassen put out such quality items, I guess it's hard to believe we still use less-than-quality items to perform. Spoiled...yep...I mean face it, a good magician can fool you with a SILVER TT, but I like the extra safety of the Vernet or similar. I would gladly pay extra to Jamie or Todd for a quality Nickles To Dimes set. These days, people DO scrutinize more than ever. I apologize for the statement "fools nobody"...that was my emotions on high...I'm glad they still sell it, in fact, I still have my original, although just for collection purposes, LOL! Best, Doug |
