I currently own Skinner’s Ultimate Three Card Monte, Farmer’s Bammo Monte Monster, and Bean's Monte 3.0. I have learned all three routines but have not performed them. I am anxious to perform one of these routines in my walk around show but I am curious as to which gimmicked Monte routine you would recommend performing. It is difficult for me to assess since I have not seen any of these performed (other than me in the mirror). What are the advantages and disadvantages of each and which do you prefer for walk around? Also, which routine offers the cleanest handling and which packs the largest impact?
Thank you, Rich

I would be more interested in hearing your report on all these questions after you go around and try each of the three on your audiences.

Thank you Whit, I'll give each of them a try this weekend and reply back with a report. It will be fun summarizing these effects relative to each other.
Warm regards, Rich

Richard:
Skinners monte uses a table, so if there are no tables free for you during your walk around, go with beans monte. (I am not familiar with the Bammo monte)I think Skinners monte is hands down the best gimmicked monte effect there is. It is also much easier to do than Beans, and easier to follow. If you are looking at presentation ideas, I recommend getting Bill Malones On the Loose DVD's. He does a great routine with the Skinners monte. Hope that helps you out. Welcome to the Café!

I use Skinner's Monte in the spec's hands. I've come up with a sequence of 4 phases that seem more fair then more impossible each step of the way. I've been asked to give this away but I won't. I'm simply writing this down to tell you that it can be done in walkaround situations without a table if you sit down and think about it. I was using temptation for a while and I still carry that in my breast pocket but nothing beats the impact of Skinner's U3CM.

I have Skinners U3CM, and it is a nice effect, if you like the 3 card monte plot.

One very important performance tip for The Bammo Monte Monster: do it slowly.
I have seen several web demos of the effect and they are way, way too fast (I invented the trick and I couldn't follow what was happening). The trick was designed to be done almost in slow motion so that the audience can follow the money card easily. This is the complete opposite of the classic monte where cards are thrown around quickly. Towards the end, when the color changes happen, the tempo should pick up, but then slow down again for the ending when the cards return to "normal." The routine is a sequence of very visual, and ever more impossible effects but the audience will not be able to see them or follow the routine if the trick is peformed quickly. |

Thank you Bob, I really appreciate your suggestions. I wasn't sure how fast the tempo was supposed to be on this effect when I first started performing your Bammo Monte Monster. I initially went too fast which caused my audience to miss some of your wonderful subtle "proof" reinforcements that you incorporated into the routine. These proofs of position are really cleverly constructed and certainly need to be absorbed by the audience. I guess my original thought that there were a lot of phases to the routine and I wanted to make sure I got through them without losing the attention of my audience. I have recently noticed that the audience still retains their attention at a slower pace and most importantly the effect gets a much better reaction. I will start working on perfecting my tempo on the ending sequences of color changes. Great suggestions, thanks again!
Warm regards, Rich

I recently have been doing UltiMonte by Harold Cataquet. Why? Because my version is TOTALLY examinable at the END. It's a great Monte routine with a great kicker ending, it's in the hands, and my presentation is MUCH slower then either Harold's or Oz's. Here is a link to the videos:

Michael Skinner Hands down! I agree with an earlier reply - you need a table!
Disdvantage, not all examinable by the spectator |

I got extensive use of Monte 3.0 at a strolling gig in Arkansas last week. Both during the hospitality hour and in the bar afterwards.
From what I have evaluated, the fact that you can have a card in the specatators pocket or lapel, and the fact they have on in their hand is a real convincer. But also the fact that you end clean, and they can see all 3 cards is a reason that I will probably purchase a couple more 3.0's and carry them with me as an everyday item. I wear suits on a daily basis, so this along with my coins, thumb tip and Preadator Wallet, give me magic at a moments notice. Thanks Gordon. |

Color Monte kills lay people and they can examine the cards at the end if they would like to. Just my two cents...
