After watching Messiah I began to wonder about how many ways there are to at least seem to predict a subject's drawings (before or after they've actually been done)? I know the basics of course, but couting impression pads and the like there must be at least a dozen. Does anyone here use any of them regularly? But more importantly (to my inquiring mind at least) is what you present the effect as to the audience, in terms of how you're supposed to be doing it?

I love Andy Nyman's handling of the drawing dup. It consists of a bit of cold reading followed by a drawing dup. It's total impromptu and oh so simple as far as handling goes.
You can find it on his DVD. I have been using this concept for quite sometime for a different trick, but Nyman turned me on to the drawing dup and I have been using it ever since. |

Wouldn't how you "explain" that you are doing it depend on what "powers" you are supposed to possess? It will be based more on the character than the particular effect?

I thought Andy Nyman was to be boycotted for helping produce a show last fall exposing mentalists .

I think the show you're referring to was a psychic debunking show. And I believe Nyman did get into a lot of trouble with the magic circle over it.
Having seen the show there was virtually nothing revealed in it, in my opinion, that would trouble the working mentalist - In fact I think these shows do a lot to get, and keep, the general public interested in such things - Personally I'd rather have the extra bookings at the expense of a few people knowing a technique to bend a spoon. Plus I've met Andy and he's very nice..so there |

As far as Nyman and exposure....I have no idea why so many magicians and mentalist worry about this. Now I don't agree with it or condone it, but let's face the facts: It gets people talking about magic again, which in turn gets me more gigs, which in turn gets me more money! I don't see anything wrong with that. Now don't get me wrong. It's not ALL about the cash. I understand and agree with the whole issue of ethics, but let's be honest. For those of us that rely on magic/mentalism as our sole income, more gigs is a beautiful thing. Also IMHO, the exposure makes us all better in the long run. It forces us to be more creative. And think about this...being a magician yourself, can you honestly recall what was exposed 2 years ago? Last year? Last week? I sure as hell can't. So what are the odds of a laymen actually remembering? And even if a method is tipped, who's to say you can't take that technique, twist it and make it look totally different? |

Derren done like 4 pictures in a row. The technique is the reverse of what you guys are suggesting. While the foundations are the same the method is different.
Lets just say that if you heard the full speil and closed your eyes and had a pad, you would have made the same images!

Don't you just love it when mentalists fall for it too, or with 1020 posts partizan I'll assume you're being a little cleverer than that - nods as good as a wink to a blind bat..
