Imagine being able to do deBruijn tricks using your mem deck as is!

I stumbled onto this a week or two ago and posted it in the "magical equations" area and have not gotten much response.
Maybe I should have posted it here in Shuffled Not Stirred.

Apologies if this has been written up before but I think this may be a new discovery.

Some mem decks have wrapping deBruijns (6 bit red cards are binary "1") in certain segments just by chance.
I call these "Natural deBruijns".

I found these deBruijns in:
Aronson:
JS thru 5S (20 cards)
7H thru QC (26 cards)
JS thru 3S (17) cards)
JS thru 8C (16) cards)

Tamariz:
10S thru AH (18 cards)

Osterlind BCS:
7C thru 6C (26 cards)

This means you can cut these cards out and do Leo Boudreau's 6 spectator "Eyes Closed if you have a red card (hearts diamonds)" trick without a special extra deck!

Also if you don't want to ask the spectators to close their eyes you can use a one-way back deck (in your mem deck deBruijn portion just orient the hearts and diamonds one way and the black cards the other way).

I use Aronson so the biggest natural deBruin in it is the 7H thru the QC so that is the one I use.

Are there other applications any of you can think of to use the deBruijn portion of a mem deck?

Leo's eyes closed ("Technicolor Deck") is done here using a 13 bit deBruijn with a 4 bit unique sequences with 4 spectators who close their eyes if they have a red card.
Leo's TECHNICOLOR DECK reveals the value but not the suit (4 cards is not enough to also reveal the suit if using all 52 cards).
The deck is a normal full deck set up with 4 sets of the same sequence of 13 card values (different mixture of suits in each 13).
The backs of all the cards are the same color and are not one-way backs.

Leo also has a full 52 bit deBruijn with 6 selected cards where he uses his Spirited Pasteboards "Heady Stuff" trick where he does reveal the value and the suit but this relies on using a one-way backed deck or red and blue cards). It is not an "Eyes Closed if Red Card" trick. It does involve some minor math to divide by 13 etc. You can buy Spirited Pasteboards on Lybrary.com for $29 (I did and was not disappointed).

Glowball, this is really well thought out stuff.

I think we might now devote some posts to how to make the effect stronger for the spec by eliminating possible solutions.

Specifically, as in much memdeck work, the first solution a spec will jump to is marked cards. What can we do to eliminate that possibility for the spectator? And the second solution would of course be a stacked deck. What presentations will be strongest in eliminating that possible solution?

And given this powerful tool you've outlined here, it might be useful to ennumerate what the advantages for the magician and spec are in using this tool, as opposed to those, which to some, would be easier to learn and use.

Landmark, I wholeheartedly agree. I'm in the process of doing exactly what you said in fact I just ordered a 52 card deck of white back bicycles (maybe overkill) and I would point out to the audience that these are not marked cards.

For Aronson in preparation I cut the deck so that the seven Hearts is at the top and then cut away and set aside the bottom half cards (2C thru 3D) and just use the 26 natural DeBruijn 7H thru QC cards with the excuse of "it may take forever if I use a whole deck".

Other thoughts:
A couple of false shuffles at the beginning and a spread of the deck for everyone to see should be pretty convincing to most people that it is not a stacked deck (the Aronson, Tamariz and Osterlind BCS will all pass muster in this regard). Also a couple of cuts by the spectator should add to that perception.

My back could be turned when they make their selections from the top of the deck. The danger is they may not take the 6 cards in the order that they are standing so must figure out my wording to control that situation.

The presentation could go something like this: your instructions to the first spectator: cut the deck a couple of times completing the cut each time then I want you to deal a card for yourself face down and a card face down for the other five spectators and then have them take their corresponding card and then cover the deck with this white handkerchief.

I would even be so bold as to point out that there was no way that I could see the bottom card or any card in the deck before the final cut.

I probably won't use the white back deck because that would not look nice for my normal Aronson routines. I'm also thinking about giving the deck to the first spectator to keep as proof that it is not marked (but would not do that with white backed cards - too expensive).

More thoughts anyone?

I've also thought about having a card with a picture of a hypnotist such as Max Maven or perhaps a free image cartoon picture and place that card on the table for everyone to stare at to help them concentrate then have another card that has a picture of an eyeball or perhaps a hypnotic eye and on the back of it I would have my cheat sheet information for the 26 octal codes and I would tell the spectators that have the red cards to look into my hypnotic eye (instead of closing their eyes).

All debruin card tricks of this nature face several major challenges:
1. Face up spread of the deck looks natural
2. Do the backs look normal
3. The ability to identify the first (or last card) of those selected.
4. The ability to identify the other cards selected.
5. It truly wraps (meaning the spectator can do deep and/or multiple cuts).

Starting from scratch if you took a shuffled deck of cards and set it up to do the red cards DeBruijn affect you could do it using the below DeBruijn:

without any cheat sheets but you would have to memorize the deck of cards two different ways. One way satisfying number 3 above to get the first card of the six and then you have to memorize the entire deck a second way to know the order of the cards to satisfy number 4 above.

If you check YouTube you will find three prominent demonstrations of DeBruijn and they all try to accomplish number 3 and number 4 using a special mathematical setup of their decks but they have compromised in other areas of the five challenges I mention above.

The beauty of using a mem deck's natural DeBruijn is that we really only have one major challenge and that is number 3 mentioned above and that can be accomplished with a very simple cheat sheet using the octal code (from us looking at the spectators eyes then us looking at our cheat sheet) to get just one card and then we're home free (because we know the other 5 cards by memory) and can focus all our attention on the presentation.

So we are a couple steps ahead of our purely mathematical brethren doing DeBruijns. Also we know how to easily set our deck up and quickly verify it before the show, not as easy for them.

It is easy to control having the cards in sequence by having one spectator deal the cards to the other spectators like they are "dealing the hole card in a game of poker". In fact that can even be the presentation, "Wouldn't it be great to to know the other player's hole card by magic?".

In lieu of using 1/2 deck natural DeBruijn if you want a full 52 card "Eyes closed if red card" DeBruijn then do the below:
Starting with a complete Aronson deck:

a. Move Js and Kc to after the 3s.
b. Move KS, 6s, 4c to after 5S.
c. Move 5H to after the 7c (before 4H).
d. Move the 6D to after the Qc.
e. Move the Qd thru 7c to after 9d.

This only takes 5 steps (quicker than the 8 step P3 that I posted in the "magical equations" area). The above steps align all the Aronson red cards with the DeBruijn "1"s and black cards with the "0"s. You won't be able to use this deck to do Aronson routines but you will have one powerful "Eyes closed if red" deck!

Let's call this one P4 it is exactly the same DeBruijn bracelet code from TomasB as P3 but entirely different card positions and different starting point therefore I will need to create a new sorted cheat sheet and a list of the deck set up just to be sure I did the five steps correctly.

Also I need to thoroughly test everything that it is a truly a wrapping DeBruijn and after I have the sorted cheat sheet to go through all 52 instances of six cards and verify against the cheat sheet. Normally I wait until I have tested before posting but I'm tired going to bed but I just wanted to get this out in case I never wake up, you never know at my age haha!

It should say "35 is 4D..." and appear one notch up in the list.

Reminder that the code to the far left is a two digit octal code low bits first. In other words the first card/spectator is a possible value 1, the second card/spectator is a possible value 2, the third card/spectator is a possible value 4, all added together to give the first octal digit.
