Hello,
As I grow older and somewhat wiser in my amateur attempts at card magic, it strikes me that one important thing often overlooked is how to get into position without "fiddling with the cards" or presetting the cards in the box. One example is when you need (say) the four aces and four kings on top to start a trick. Another is when you need (say) four black spot cards (6,8,9) and four red spot cards (6,8,9). I understand a couple of ways. One is while you are upjogging cards for another trick, also upjog the kings and aces and move them to the top. Or, do a trick that involves dealing and collect the discards in some kind of order to do your next trick. Any other suggestions on "how to get into it"? I am surprised at how little work seems to be published on this important topic. |

This all depends on your performing environment. You specify that you’re an amateur, but seem to be sticking to the strictures of a professional mindset. As an amateur, you don’t have to do multi-trick “sets” or “routines”. But even if you do want to do that kind of performance, you have all the time in the world to, say, pre-load cards in the card box, or in your pocket, or under a newspaper sitting on your coffee table. You have pretty much endless tools at your disposal, because this isn’t a performance where the spotlight is on you the whole time.
Just run to the bathroom and pre-set the deck |

"Gosh, you were gone to the bathroom a long time. What were you doing back there?"
"Um... uh... I was... uh... pleasuring myself."

Not nearly as embarrassing as, “I was setting up for the Robot Deck.”

It's relatively easy to cull cards under some guise-i.e. checking that there are 52 cards in the deck, memorizing the order, "accidentally" reversing a card during a shuffle and going through the deck to correct it, etc.

With enough practice it is possible to do while casually holding the deck and passing it from hand to hand during idle conversation or while using the washroom. https://www.loc.gov/resource/rbc0001.2010houd11604/?sp=67 Here is a 29-minute live performance of mine: https://youtu.be/lq2Rj1uf05M I used to be quite sensitive to criticism; I am much less so now; so, please do criticize my technique, presentation, and posts. I set up while doing something else. I will sometimes do it in the "installment plan", a few cards at a time, until I have the stock that I need.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....
