We accumulate a TON of magic stuff over a career! From lecture notes, books, props, instructions, specialty decks, silks, and everything sponge.

How do you sort and store your magic collection?

We are working on a podcast episode, "How to Organize Your Magic Collection" to help share useful tips for other magicians (myself included) I'm wondering if you have a system or process? How you sort your magic stuff?

Do you have any helpful storage strategies or ideas to share?

FileMaker PRo is fabulous for this.
Book images are available and you can set the category. Applies to DVD's, tricks or any other database you wish to set up.
Easy to use,but can be very advanced. Not cheap, but so many other uses.

For some small items on display, I use football display cases from Hobby Lobby. For lecture notes and booklets, I put them in alphabetical order by, author or topic, in magazine cases. Most of my props are stored in clear plastic totes, by type of prop.

A lot of TCC luxury case's for small props / cards / spongeballs / silks (or makeup cases).

Also have a Google sheet where I list all the tricks I have and some details like (name, type of tricks, how confident I am at performing it, how much I enjoy performing it, how much the audeince tends to enjoy it, notes, where the trick is from, if I practice and recorded it what the file is called).

I have a friend who is in a different line of work but who is the most organized pack-rat I've ever met. I wish I could be like him. He is a do-it-yourselfer and is organizing stuff like tape, screws, different kinds of glue, and on and on. So, and I've done the first part...he got lots of cigar boxes at garage sales. So did I. Then he did what I have not done - yet, he put a number on each box and he has a loose-leaf ring binder with lists showing the number of the cigar box and then listed what's in the box. It is so obvious. I was trying to do it by memory and thinking I would remember what I put where. I was so impressed yet I still haven't done it yet.

Ray Bradbury used to claim that he kept his studio cluttered with unusual junk, even hanging from the ceiling, because he believed he had better juxtapositions of ideas that way. Tony Spina of the old Tannen's had a sign "If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what does an empty desk signify?" over his cluttered desk...cluttered with magic props. But really, I want to organize, honest I do.
