Daub I didn't understand the question completely. I'm sorry, but are you trying to sell it as a packaged trick/video for example to wal-mart? Or is it an expos'e
of the real work for publication or TV? I would say if you worked hard on it why expose it.... but I'm not certain if I understood right.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I suggest to you, daub, that you describe the effect here and find out if it is indeed original.

Do you think the trick is good? Is it "new" material"? No problems with copyrights?
Are the answers always "Yes"? Then: of course sell it!!!! Magixx

Daub posted the question and many members kindly adviced him, but we have not received any responses from him.
We still don't know if it has his originality and what the trick is. I suspect if the original poster had sincere desire to know the answers. Be careful to say "Go ahead" without knowing his creation. He can state "Magic Café members adviced me to publish (sell) this trick". Hideo Kato |

Try having it published by LL, they put out great videos, and they will publish it only if they think it is good- therefore they will give you a understanding of how good it is, and if it will make money.
Good luck with the trick, and the video (if you do it)!!,

Don't sell anything. Keep it. Keep it. Keep it.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

If magicians didn't sell I could never have become a magician.
I don't understand what you mean Mr. Townsend.

Hold up, we have 2 pages of ideas and don't even know if its his trick yet. You need to describe the effect. 9 times out of 10 its not your trick. Everyones getting worked up over this. Put your effect in a post so we can see if its even yours or not.

FYI-
Mailing yourself stuff and relying on a postmark is never proof of anything but you've mailed an empty, open envelope to yourself. Again, this old saw is never proof of anything and never holds up in any court. There are obviously a million ways scamsters can get around that one...magicians too. Judges haven't fallen for that one for centuries. If you want a copyright, best apply for one unless you have other ways of showing the item and a connected time line. Don't do yourself future harm: Apply for the copyright, it's cheap.

All I would need to do would be to use my own words to explain the effect, and use my own illustrations or photographs. I would not have to ask Paul Harris, and I would not have to pay him any royalties. I would not have to credit him as the originator. The means by which the effect is published is protected by copyright, but not the effect itself. I can't scan Drawing Room Deceptions into a pdf file and share or sell it online. But I can write my own book and sell it with any of Hollingworth's effects in it. I think if you have an effect, it's best to get it published and at least get your name on it. There have been some famous "crediting" battles, mostly of egos wanting to get credit for something that had been invented somewhat simultaneously, or one being derived from the other. Unless your career is at a very high level (at least national fame), you probably don't profit all that much from keeping your own original effects secret. Better to get it out in the world with your name on it, then to have somebody else invent it or take credit for it while you're sitting on it. |

I have changed my mind having thought about it, I think we should keep secrets. That’s what real magicians would do. I can’t see Merlin the magician contemplating selling secrets, I can only see him using them. If we are supposed to be magicians why don’t we act like them?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Because Merlin the Magician would have survived in grand style by the good graces of His Royal Majesty the King. The rest of us have food to buy and mortgages to pay.
There is an economic imperative and a mutual gain to be had by magic secrets being disseminated. The inventor (ideally) makes money by publishing the new works, and the rest of us can make money performing them. And it's not all just about money. When the public loses interest in magic, all magicians suffer for lack of performance opportunities, and a lowered public perception of magic overall (as we saw in the late 20th century). How much more impoverished would the entire field of card magic be had Dai Vernon "acted like a magician" and kept everything he knew and learned a secret? |
