Has anyone used Steve Elve's copper cups for C&B? I'd be interested to know how they compare in size to other jumbo cups. They look to be nice cups, similar to the small-top Animal cups (but with one ring/shoulder).
[I know Bill Palmer has a pic in the excellent Cups & Balls Museum, but the Elve cups aren't in the lineup to compare sizes. Bill - if you can spare a minute to comment I'd be grateful.] Thanks Richard
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Sure. They are 3 7/8 inches tall with a 3 1/2 inch mouth diameter. They will fit over a Gazzo cup all the way down to the shoulder bead. They cover a Galli-Galli- cup completely. They are smaller than the Michael Lee Millenium Cup, though.
But you can't do the three ball display on top of them.

Thanks, Bill. Are they heavy cups or on the light side (like the Bosco cups) - and have they been spun well?
I'm a bit ambivalent about the three ball display. I sometimes wonder whether revealing that three balls can be hidden between two cups tips the method too heavily. I occasionally do the display with my Sherwood cups - but mainly because the size and shape of those cups adds to the effect (the balls seem to be hanging on the edge). I have a set of the new design Gary Animal cups and was wondering whether to add to my collection with either a small top Animal set or go for something a bit different. I have never seen anyone use these. Of course, on top of the cost of the cups, there's also a small matter of the cost of postage from Australia...

The Elve cups are considerably heavier than the Boscos. They are spun quite well.

I should have been more exact in my description of how they cover the cups. The Galli Galli cups in my collection are 4 inches tall and have an ID of 3.37 inches, measured with an accurage dial caliper. The Elve cups will fit over them down past the shoulder beads, until the bottom of the depression in the elve cup contacts the top of the Galli Galli cup. The OD of the Galli Galli cup at the shoulder beads is 3.45 inches. The actual ID of the Elve cup is 3.57 inches. About 2/3 of an inch of cup remains uncovered when you do this.
Any further penetration of the Galli Galli cup is an illusion.

Bill,
Thanks for the clarification. I measured the I.D. with a scale, tonight I'll recheck with a vernier caliper. A difference of 1/8" between your set and mine seems odd for a series of cups. I'm usually pretty good with a scale, perhaps my 50 year old eyes tricked me. Bill Sutter |

There may be a link at the cups and balls museum. They are very difficult to obtain, though.

Stephen Elve is from Canada, Nova Scotia to be exact. But the cups are made in Australia somewhere. I can't mention exactly how they came to be in the museum, otherwise one of my suppliers will be unhappy.
Cup and ball collecting is a strange affliction. It's kind of like people who collect trophy heads. There are a couple of brothers who live near Houston who own barbeque restaurants. Each one of them has a huge collection of trophies -- deer, bear, fish, etc. -- in his restaurant. It's almost like they were running a contest. I asked one of them about these collections: "When do you fellows have time to hunt and fish, when you are so busy cooking and doing charitable work?" "Oh, we don't hunt and fish at all -- our customers bring these in to us." Their places are located on the main highways close to areas where hunting and fishing are quite common, and the fellows tend to stop in for food after the hunt. I think some of the wives of these hunters and fishermen are repulsed by the idea of getting up for a drink of water in the middle of the night and accidentally wandering into the open arms of a stuffed brown bear. The only time cups ever frighten anyone is when a shelf collapses!

I have been in touch with Dave Lord. He has the Steve Elve cups in stock. They come in three finishes:
1. 'Natural' copper (i.e. will tarnish nicely) 2. Lacquered copper (keeping that just-polished look, but with all the usual drawbacks) 3. Antiqued copper (a aged/burnished/distressed look) Current price is $250 + shipping from Australia. Richard

Just so there is no confusion, Stephen is now spelling his name differently so that people pronounce it right:
Stephen's Website This guy is a real nice fellow, as well as a mighty fine practioner of our art. Doug

WOW! No wonder he changed it. I had no idea that "Elve" was pronounced "website."

It is tempting to remind Mr. Palmer of the meanings of:
- a colon - an apostrophe - a hyper-link But who am I to talk? I can't even spell "practitioner"

But just think, you are one of the few who can spell "practioner." That's a distinction of sorts.

Does that put me in the same league as the erstwhile "General Practicioner [sic]"?
