I've become increasingly interested in mentalism lately. I do mostly cards, coins and other closeup stuff right now. Now, with cards, you have "Royal Road to Card Magic" and "Easy to Master Card Miracles" and with coins you have "Bobo's Modern Coin Magic." Now, by no means are these 100% complete resources, but they are a great place to start and to get some great working material from. So my question: Is there a resource like this for mentalism? Easy to Master Mental Miracles looks promising, but I am BRAND NEW. I really don't have a clue when it comes to mentalism. What would be the best resource for my money?

There has been topics for this tons of times (in fact, one was just posted today). Your best bet would be in my opinion 13 steps to mentalism.
Thanks! Scott B.

Also agreed, with a very very strong second for Anneman's Practical Mental Magic.
I now have both. Some people have recommended Anneman's book over Corinda's. Hard to go wrong with either.

There is no ONE source like Bobo's, but if you get the Corinda book mentioned above, the three volumes of Jinx, Bob Cassidy's Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy and Ken Weber's Maximum Mentalism, then you will be literally set for life. -- Jheff

Read Corinda a number of times, go back to the Jinx books time to time to gain food for thought, have been reading Maximum Entertainment an infinate amount of times the last month and am about to drop the $40 for the new Cassidy book. (btw, love the site)

You might also buy a couple of videos or try to see mentalists live to get a sense for different performing styles. (Then forget them and develop you own). Great mentalists are great performers who happen to do mentalism effects. Kreskin is a hypnotist, mentalism and pianist...and is very entertaining at all three.

Thanks for all the help guys. I do apologize for bringing up a topic that has already been heavily discussed. Like I said, I've never stepped foot in this forum yet and didn't even know what to search for. All the input has been tremendously helpful to me though. Thanks so much.

Plus, some of the very best mentalists in the field, are not and probably won't ever be on a commercial video. I do recommend that you see as many mentalists' performances in person as you can. I just disagree that DVDs/videos are the best way to appreciate their performances.

I agree about corinda,if you do read it through it really isn't as dated as people say.there are some items in there you may find trouble getting hold of n** paper white c***** etc.annemans practical mentle effects I'm just not a fan of.there are some modern books you may want to try, mentalism inc. stunners plus.max mavern on dvd videomind I like and banachek psi series.really I think the way to go is to think of your own routines and then work out how you can do them.when your at that stage try wonderwords for there are some great principles in there. oh and you can get the entire jinx on cdrom a real bargain around £10.00 ish print out the articles your interested in.paul

I would agree that 13 steps is an essential book, but I would not say it is the place to start. It can be difficult to read, and will require a lot of work to make the presentations look swish. This puts a lot of people off. I'd suggest starting with something a little more accessable:
In my opinion, it is easier to start with a DVD. For me, the best place to start is with Osterlind's Mind Mysteries volume one. This will teach you one of the best center tears going, and some other gems. A couple of which are easy to learn, and simple for the audience to understand. It's also going to make your first steps in Mentalism a lot more entertaining, which is something I think is important. When you have got this go for Corinda's. Spend a lot of time with it, reading it, and chewing it over, and find what you can from it that you like, rescript it to suit you and go from there. Pay attention to the last chapter in the book - the 13th Step is one of the most valuable lessons out there. Then look towards Practical mental magic. I think this would give you the strongest start for your buck. I'm always in the minority with this view, and I usually get told off.
Trust anyone who has gone through it.

I'm been in this a while now and I still go through Corinda. When you read it think period, or seance type settings, or old english drawing rooms. People love to hear of far off times and places so reading corinda helps put me in that frame of mind.
I often find the idea of sittiing around a seance table in he presence of a psychic/medium/mentalist 50 to 80 years ago much more exciting then if it were today, so I try to give my audience a sence of what it was like to be around in those days and meet those people while trying to get accross that I am recreating what people once participated in all that time ago. to me that adds another dimension to a performance and corinda to me is what helps that frame of mind. Mind, Myth, and Magick by T.A. Waters has had the most BANG FOR THE BUCK for several decades IMO. It's not very expensive and the practical applications are ENDLESS. Unlike Corrinda's 13 Steps, almost all of the book is super current, and you'll never feel as if you are spinning your wheels. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Corrinda, but MMM just seems much more up to date, especially for someone new to the field.
