KiKi, I recommend giving very serious thought to your sound.
Hopefully you have a small portable system. If the group is larger than 15 I would use one. Many times the older folk are happy to be out and socializing and will sometimes not be very couteous as far as holding down the chatter while your performing,...Mind you they aren't trying to be rude it's just that they're excited to be out and usually have a lot to talk about. If you have a sound system you can always just crank it and do what your there to do entertain them.Good Luck

Do Spellmans Russian Roulette with Staple Guns over their hands
On a serious note, keep it simple and try to relate it to them, ie: you may predict a classic song title or a famous film star from their era, avoid booktests unless you have a maginfying glass which can make a humourous gag.. Be exceptionally polite and curteous and treat them with respect.. The Prize Draw from Spellmans set might be a nice closer leaving the elderly ladies with roses whilst you get your pay cheque or something like that, I did this at a hen night and had some very interesting offers.. Not that you'd want that in your situation.. or maybe you would??

Make sure you shout really loud in a patronising way. I find that works for the older generation.
Also be aware of the 'repeat syndrome' where they repeat the last few words of your sentence, if worked right you can use it for predicting what they will say. |

I also find giving them a nudge every few minutes is wise to do.. One to check they are awake or in worst case situations.... still alive...

I find that the only real concern here would be to have them read fine print or write really small. Otherwise, knock them dead with your regular material.

You might try showing up with some respect ...
a 60 to 70 year old will probably understand more than a 20 year old generally speaking. |

Excuse me if I was a bit rude, but I have a very deep respect for seniors and humor like that is not needed. It just rubed me the wrong way. What I meant is because they are old, it dosen't mean you have to do anything different than you would for a 20 yr. old...man or woman. old people need not be treated any differently than younger people.
A 75 yr. old person will appreciate any effect as long as it's well done, probably even more than a younger person. Old people are no different than young people except for two things...they aren't and "able" as us younger folks, and second, older people are a lot wiser than we younger people. ~Rick~ And yes, a compliment from an older person made to me means a lot more than one from a 30 year old. Why ? Because they maen it...If you harrow the fields that and older person has plowed...you'll be a better person for it. ~Rick~ P.S. LOL...I'm not pointing at any of you, I'm pointing at my posting so it's not rude. R. |

I just read all of the postings on this thread. Do some of you expect a long career in Mentalism ? Because I see a few future shoe salesmen and one manager for McDonalds and you don't have to be a mind reader to figure that out...just re-read the postings.

I have performed for many elderly groups at numerous charity functions, I find them to be very enjoyable, most of the time they tell you about magic and mentalism from the past, I even had one spectator tell me about this wonderful performer she saw called "Chanasta or Canasta? something like that." she then went on to embelish the miracles he performed..
I guess the best advice is to remember there humour is a little more refined than modern audiences so keep it clean and curteous.. |
