If given the chance to be 20 or even 30 again, I would never, ever, do it. I can jump up higher, stay up longer and come down faster than any 20 or 30 year old can. I'm in A-1, perfect health and I'm married to a 24 year old woman...(not bad for an old guy of 48, eh ?) The only thing I have to come to terms with is where to go on our next vacation....Aussie or Germany.

My wife is 50, but I like to think of her as two 25-year olds! Drew |

LOL Drew...actually I met Em where she worked and she was smoking. I said "I can have you off that in an hour", she came to my place a few days later with a friend and as soon as she came through that door...I knew this was the woman I would spend the rest of my life with.
~Rick~ P.S. she still smokes...LOL! |

What in the world would make anyone assume that 60-70 year olds are or react to mentalism (or magic) any differently than any other adults -- with the possible exception of 18 to 20-somethings (i.e., "marginal adults"). If there is a difference, apart from the fact that more of them may need reading glasses, it is that they are wiser, more experiencer, more knowledgeable, more sophisticated and more "culturally literate" than the under 40 crowd all of which contribute to make those in the 40-70 demographic one of the best audiences for mentalism. BTW, 80 is the "new 60."

Avoid effects where they need to read, eye sight not so good at that age, also use large pip cards if you use cards, and speak slowly, and be very clear as well, hearing goes too, they will not be insulted if you handle this properly, don't treat them like they are children, just remember , they have limitations in certain areas, also, don't do any complicated or hard to follow effects, not because they can not follow, but older woman will get board and their minds will wonder, they are in a hurry for the results, even though they are not going anywhere, I have done a few retirement gigs, and they are an easy, yet tough crowd, perfect for trying out a new effect, especially if you tell one or two, this is a test gig, they will be quite candid with you. They love jokes, and they will be a lot of fun, so enjoy.

All the folk in this age range are pretty much regular adults - the only distinction I can think of are that any cultural references I make would have to be things that they would appreciate (let's not forget that today's 60-year-old was a teenager in the swinging 60s). I can't think of any 60-70 year olds that I know for whom I would have to change any significant aspect of my performance. |

60's and 70's are not old. They're jogging, reading, writing and running companies. They're running countries and even get involved in a few scandals. They enjoy good entertainment as we all do. I love performing for this age group and they're very appreciative.

This thread is about 5 years old now but if given the chance I'd gladly perform for the older crowd. Most of the effects I perform have a scary theme to them but straight mentalism works well with older people. If you are younger, expect to stay after the show and listen to their stories. They have wisdom that is not found in any books and if you're into the spooky thing the older generations seem to have better stories than what's popular these days.
Really though, the same show you do now will more than likely be appreciated more by this crowd...and they may have more money to hire or rehire you. |

Most of my shows are for 60 and over, keep it funny, have a good story line to hook them and a good sound system. They will like anything anyone else does over the age of 12, just do not scare them to bad or they might flat line on you.

In fact, most are still working, are physically fit and intellectually if not always physically can probably run rings around "Dave" (especially in when it comes to spelling). Although one of the things that DOES bore them is youngsters that think like "Dave."

Any real worker who uses book tests knows that the first thing you do when presenting a book test is to suggest that anyone who would like to participate and needs glasses to read should put them on. In case you haven't noticed, some elementary school children wear glasses.

Dick Christian, check your glasses, I knew it would be only a matter of time before someone mis understood my post, please forgive me if you feel insulted, But , please allow me to share some things, I am 50, not 30, and I have worked many facilities with the elderly, specifically in the Trenton NJ area, a PM and I will provide references for you to contact. With that said, many of them are in better shape physically than me, but the fact remains, that many, if not most suffer from poor eye sight and poor hearing, Heck, I was bald by 25, wearing reading glasses by 35 and I could never hear well . there is nothing wrong with sharing the facts.
