Hi, guys. Those of you who know me will know I perform a water safety themed magic show for school assemblies. Info on this show is at: http://www.WaterSafety.co.nz
Schools here in New Zealand resume after our summer break at the beginning of February. Once school begins I know Tsunami education is going to be the hot topic. That is why I want to add a segment on Tsunami education into my water safety show. So I am looking for ideas for a five-minute routine that explains what a tsunami is, how to tell one is coming and what to do, i.e., run for the hills. Does anyone have any ideas of any routines or effect this could be married up this message? Don’t worry if any of your suggestions sound silly, they might inspire me or someone else.

Not sure if this idea is helpful, but I do remember when I was at school the teacher showed something about tornadoes using a old coke bottle. Not sure how it went, but you could see the water spinning round in the bottle. Maybe this post will get some thoughts going.

Tough one, Andy.
When the Tsunami hit I remember people saying the first they saw of it was a white line on the horizon. Rope to silk. Rope representing line on horizon. Silk blue to represent water or red to represent danger? You could then take the silk to vanish a model house or object to represent it being swept away. |

The difficulty is not in designing the show. The problem lies in the fact that a sufficient warning system was not and is not in place. Without such a system it's hard to tell anyone what to look for if a Tsunami is about to hit.
The news reports I've seen suggested that the wave was moving incredibly fast - so fast that you couln't even hear it coming. If that's the case, by the time anyone saw the "white line" on the horizon and figured out what it was - it would be too late. Even if you did "run for the hills" it would be next to impossible to escape. I'm not trying to dissuade you from putting together a very useful and informative show. I'm just concerned that the advice be accurate - it should not create a false sense of security. Maybe the show should focus on the total lack of predictability (mentalism effects?) and the inability to escape (some type of escape effect with a danger element to it). The Tsunami tore apart an entire region of the world, causing unimaginable death and destruction - but now it is time for the world to come together and rebuild (Torn & Restored Newspaper). Just a thought.

Hi magic man. I alreday have a 45 minute show on water safety which includes messages on not swimming alone, swimming between the flags & wearing life jackets.
I'm just trying to be topicial by briefly explain a tsanami. For many places the 1st sign a tsunami is coming is the tide disappears & goes way out. When this happend in Thailand it attracted a lot of people to the beach. In some cases fish had been left high & dry & were flapping on the exposed shore bed. Boats lay on the shore bed as the tide was sucked out from under them. This attracted children & adults who walked out to have a look. Maybe I could make some water vanish then when it reappears there is 10 times as much. http://walkermagic.com/1104400539.jpg
