Does Phil Plus still just use one deck?

Certainly does, however, I believe they are female names and the font is pretty bad. Get the blank deck, and write your own names. Looks much less like a magic deck.

Do Phil or Phil Plus decks come in Bicycle backs?
Or just some generic back? |

By being blank, it just means that there is no lettering (NAMES) pre-printed on the backs of the cards. You do that yourself. So, you can put on the back anything you wish, some use numbers, for instance.
You can get a bicycle version from Alakazam, however, there will be restrictions with a bike deck version. Or you will have to have 2 decks as opposed to 1 with the Protea cards. I have mentioned this before but the best excuse in the world for using cheap looking cards, and not your expensive ones (Bicycle) is because you have marked them all on the back. |

I've been doing the "Name your card" routine since long before Don Alan did it. In fact, I am the person who showed it to Don Alan. I was very surprised when it originally appeared on the market, being sold as Don Alan's creation (it wasn't -- Ali Bongo created it -- before Fred Lowe's "Christened Reverse"), by Ken Brooke. I was not only surprised, I was shocked and disappointed, because Don knew it wasn't his. Later, I learned from Don that he had shown it to Ken, who claimed that he already owned the rights to it (via Fred Lowe). This version was a two deck version that used the R&S principle. I still use this version, because I am more comfortable with it than I am with any other version.
I have seen EVERY version of this trick on the market. I have owned most of them. This said, "A Card Named Phil" is an excellent version. Yes, the cards are an inexpensive odd backed card. This doesn't matter at all. No, the spectator's card cannot be handed to him without the possibility of his/her noticing that it is a little different from a normal card. However, if you are a decent entertainer, none of this should make a difference. This trick is so strong that doing the repeat kicker is a matter of redundancy. The script I use goes basically like this: "If I were to have you simply think of a card...any card in a pack of 52 playing cards, and I were to tell you the name of your card before you told me which card you were thinking of, would you be impressed? Of course you would, because it's impossible! "I'm not going to have you take a card out of a pack, or even look at a card. I just want you to let your mind wander through a pack of cards, and when you have found one you like, then remember it. By the way, don't just think of the Ace of Spades or the Queen of Hearts. Those are the most commonly thought of playing cards. Think of an unpopular card, such as the four of clubs or the nine of diamonds. "Got one? Good. I want you to form a picture of that card in your mind. Visualize it. (in a tongue in cheek fashion) I want you to form a really bold picture of that card in your mind... I see something forming above your head...Either it's your card, or the smoke detector is about to go off. "The name of your card is 'Phil'!" At this point, you hold your arms outstretched, as if awaiting a thunderous round of applause. Then look disappointed and dismayed. "You don't believe me.... This is not some kind of cheap joke....Seriously, what card were you thinking of?" Now you bring out the cards for the first time. If you are doing a two deck version, you know which one to bring out. Some magicians see this point as a weak spot in the routine. It isn't at all. Trust me on this. Now you show the cards. "You see, cards are like people. They have faces, they have backs and they have names. This is the face of the King of Hearts. This is his back, and there's his name -- Dave." You show a few cards, front and back, calling attention to the names, then you miscall their card...for example, if they are thinking of the six of hearts, you say, "Here's your card, the four of hearts." and you pull that card partway out of the deck. "Oh, that's right, yours was the SIX of hearts -- 'Phil'." and you place that card on the table, or if you are using standard cards, on their outstretched palm. Turn the deck face down and quickly show that all the cards have different names, stating, "All different on the front, all alike on the back, except for the names, which are all different." "You were thinking of the six of hearts, I said you were thinking of the card named 'Phil.' And the six of hearts IS the CARD..NAMED..PHIL!" BTW, my card is NOT named Phil. I use a different name which I found gets a bigger laugh. You can use any name you want to. I think a kicker at this point is redundant. This is a kick-butt card trick. There aren't many of them. And you can use this for ANY size audience. The back design is of absolutely NO consequence. The spectators focus on the names. There are very few tricks that can follow this.

When in Vegas or Baltimore, stop in at Denny Haney's shop and ask him to do HIS version of the trick. Adults only, Father Photius not allowed.

Very interesting Bill, thanks for that story, and suggested patter. Shame on Don Alan. I let the specs handle the cards and have never, ever been questioned. My latest version is called the Horror deck, using the Phil deck. I will film a demo this weekend.

Senator Crandall, upon seeing Don perform the "Don Alan Chop Cup Routine" for the first time, said, "He has very clever ears." The patter was very similar to the Crandall one cup and ball patter.
Others said that Don had a very "convenient" memory. The interesting part was that the name on my first deck was the same name that I put on Don's cards. He liked it for the same reason I did. I must admit that I was a LOT younger in those days and trusted everyone. So, to even have a conversation with Don Alan was a really big thing for me. I should say that I did wrong when I gave him the cards. I shouldn't have done it. I didn't understand the ethics of magic back then with the same clarity that I do now. Given the same situation now, I would have made a couple of phone calls on the spot and gotten permission from the people I thought were involved in this. I learned the true history of the trick from Ali Bongo. If you ever have a chance to meet him, make sure you take as much time with him as he can spare. He is a walking encyclopedia of magic.

Wasn't it Don Alan that went on rants about people stealing from him?

Maybe that's the description for phil plus deck, which uses only 1 deck, and can be out on the table in full view before the trick even starts.

This is one of the best decks around. It appeals to people who do not like card magic, and their are a few.

You can put the Phil deck in a Bicycle box.
No one will know the difference. |
